Alas, I imagine most of them don't have access to the news media to learn that the dangers are very high and the chances of success are very low.

Then again, some of them are escaping lives so desperate that even death might seem a more positive outcome and that is the truly  Sad part.

Well said, you and I we know the risks...........but these poor sods only see 1 way............OUT!
No media, no basic scientific education at times.........just misery / poverty!

I personally dealt with stowaways (on ships), and it´s amazing to talk to these people.
Forget all the values, forget about things you may lose in life.............just OUT! Just to get away from the past. If there isn´t anything worth staying for and a person enjoyed limited education as it is...............this individual may well take shot at a chance that may bring him / her new hope!
