According to the RJ website it looks that RJ is having a one time NON-stop flight on July 20 AMM-LAX.....I am not sure if they are trying to test the route or what?

http://www.rj.com/CustomerServices/L...abid/393/locale/en-US/default.aspx

Royal Jordanian, Back in the days known as ALIA, did offer flights to LAX with stops in AMS and ORD....

I wonder why RJ is flying an one-way flight to LAX using an A340-200? Are they storing the aircraft at Victorville after arrival to LAX?

Once in 1988, I was plane-spotting with a telescope from my driveway in Prescott, Arizona; and I spotted a Royal Jordanian L1011 passing over the Drake VOR towards LAX. It was a pleasant surprise!

Although I don't know this for sure without checking, my guess would be because if this was booked as a round trip, RJ would codeshare with AA on LAX-JFK and LAX-ORD, but there is no nonstop LAX-DTW flight.

Is it possible, this is just another charter flight carrying some part of the Royal family?

May be a dumb question, but, can the airplane make this long of a flight with AMM's elevation?

According to Great Circle Mapper AMM-LAX is 7,617 miles and the max range w passengers according to airbus for the A342 is 8,700 miles. So they should be able to make it, but I could be wrong...

Since it's bookable, I would presume not. Doubt if the Jordanian Royal family has mere commoners not part of the Royal Household on board their aircraft. And don't they have a dedicated aircraft?

Quoting Wedgetail737 (Reply 1):

Possible, I suppose... though I hope not. An Airbus A340-200 is rather a rara avis.

My two guesses for this rather mysterious flight (at least before somebody who actually KNOWS comes on here and tells us, or hints at it) are:

1. The aircraft is coming to southern California for some sort of mechanical procedure (a heavy check, or the installation of some sort of onboard equipment, like a security system from a California defense company).

2. The flight AMM-LAX is to position the aircraft for a charter (either pax or cargo) and RJ thought they'd try selling a few tickets (to test the route?).

Well, just saw the RJ advertisement in the local paper today which basically says:

Take advantage and fly with us direct to Los Angeles non-stop and for one flight only on 20.July.2009. Departing Monday from Amman at 2:00 and arriving Los Angeles at 8:00. Make sure you book your return flight from New York or Chicago on RJ to Amman direct.

Out of curiosity, I called the RJ reservation and inquired. The employee didn't know what the deal is with this flight except that it is on his system and bookable. So not much help there.

yes apprently this flight shows a special flight number 5507 , although www.flightstats.com shows a regular flight nbr such as RJ 263 ....

What would be intersting is to know how much passengers the aircraft will carry , the exact MTOW with pax , bags , freight and pantry .... in order to show the real aircraft performances for a bird getting ... old !

Another not surprised confirmation : the aircraft is an A340-200.

Looking for more info about this route

Kind regards

dennys

How puzzling. Not only are they operating this seemingly oddball flight, they've advertised it in the L.A. paper?!

He didn't say L.A. paper. He means a paper in Amman.

Yes, that is the big question!. I know that RJAF tried to contact RJ reservations in Amman asking about this flight, and they were not able to tell him any information about this flight. It looks that RJ may either leave the A340-200 behind in California!. It is strange why there is not a return flight advertised to AMM. I am wondering if our Jordanian A-netters can find out what the registration of this aircraft is!.

The only facts we know at the moment is that this flight is bookable for the public on the flight on July 20 only.

Best Regards,

AMS

Maybe the flight positions the aircraft to California to bring some royal family member BACK to Jordan from there and RJ ?

King went from Sun Valley to Flagstaff yesterday (7/10). Maybe they are cruising around the area until the 20th or so.
