DL 10k MQM Gift

Woke up this morning to find an email from DL. They deposited 10k MQMs in my account, not obligation or catch. They said it was because they know that customers may be traveling less this year not of their own doing, and want to make sure that loyal customers can still earn medallion status this year.

This is a big way to boost loyalty, and demonstrates that DL does understand that elite status is about loyalty, despite what some a.netters say.

And their market research had to have shown this. For me, because I had no chance of getting medallion this year, I was going to fly "whoever" the rest of the year. Now that I have these extra 10k, the rest of the year should put me over 25k if I stay with DL.

Smart move.

Anyone else get free MQMs? Did previous golds or platinums get more than 10k?

As a silver I got 5,000 MQMs today, so I should be able to keep it for 2010.

Whats funny is I was figuring id need to do a cheap europe run to get it, now I can push it off to winter 2010 probably... probably not their intention!

Got the 15K bonus....don't know what the algorithim was but people either got 5K, 10K or 15K...looks like offer is only for existing Medallions.

I am a Gold Medallion and recieved 10,000 MQM's putting my current MQM balance at 35,700. So keeping my Gold status for 2010 is now a non issue. I'll still probably do a mileage run to LAX in order to get a ride on the 777-200LR though.   Very nice surprise, thank you very much Delta!

Love Delta !!! ( I live in DC now and refuse to fly UA or US with their unfriendly practices toward travelers that they keep trying to implement and fail)

The MQM gifts were loyalty driven and by level. They ranged from 5-15MQM and were designed to drive loyalty during a period when travel (premium and even leisure) is at lower levels than ever.

Good move on DL's loyalty program's part.

Not that I'm complaining but I have no idea why they gave me 15K when I already have way too many MQMs in 2009 and still have more than 10 roundtrips already booked for the rest of the year!  Smile

I am a NW gold and have gotten NOTHING.

My wife is a DL silver and got 10k.

Can I expect anything? I transferred my skymiles in to my NW account when they linked the two to keep everything in my account w/elite status.

Any input?

I got 10k and only had 4.5k this year before that. But last year I earned 23k from July 1 to Dec 1, (had my status from CO matched to get silver after switching to DL in July). So maybe they saw my previous CO record of 8 years as silver and gold (from my request letter), and used that to determine that I'm a loyal kind of flyer and gave me 10k instead of 5k.

Or...

This 10k will just get me to 25k by Dec 31, after 3 planned transcons for various holidays. Without it, I would have only gotten to about 16-17k.

They may have looked at last year's travel for H2, seen how much bonus I would need to pass the tier threshhold I had last year, and then given out 5k, 10k, or 15k depending on my predicted need in order to entice me to do all of that same travel on DL.

If that's the case, I would also guess that if someone ended up at 47k by Dec 31, they might again "bump" them up since they proved their loyalty to get that close.

As you know with many things DL - there is no rhyme or reason. Things just sorta "happen."

And thanks for rubbing the way too many MQMs in bud! j/k  Wink

DL's loyalty department often does EoY bumps based on mileage thresholds or spending patterns.

Not necessarily, I flew a lot of cheapos this year and got the 15K, could be hub-captive vs. competitive market factors no? Not sure.

Either way, I appreciate DLSMs drive to continue building loyalty beyond reason where they can (a lot of things are actually out of their control, yet they get the wrath for it). I'm requalified for Plat for the year already, so now I have incentive to push toward the new "official" 4th tier.

All this is airlines as experiencing a massive loss of elite flyers, and are willing throw out miles to help people qualify.

Look at the double EQM promotions AA and UA also had going earlier in the year

And airlines are not the only ones. Both Marriott and Hilton hotels this year rolled over elite levels for millions of members for an additional year that had not qualified.

Yes, but if elite status didn't reflect loyalty, DL and AA and UA wouldn't bother. We hear arguments all the time that elite status is no longer about loyalty, elite programs are worthless, elite freebies aren't fair and don't have value to the airline, etc. Obviously, the airlines, during these tough times, still believe elite programs are very important.

Sure an elite flyer is worth more then the average once a year John Doe flyer.

From what I hear elite members, or those estimated to requalify have dropped by as much as 40% across the industry as corporate and higher yield travel has very much fallen off a cliff.

Ultimately airlines would like to hang on to as much of the remaining 60% and hopefully gain back the other 40% and encourage all to patronize their business as often as possible over its competitors hence why most carriers are offering various forms of sweeteners.

I'm not sure how effective such sweeteners will be on the whole however and none really deal with the crux of the issue -- the economy and wholesale decline in travel.

Yes they are important. I've paid twice the price just to fly Star Alliance.

I have 3 friends that only fly Delta/ NWA. I was with one last weekend when he was purchasing a MSP-RIC ticket for $1100 bucks. I looked and United was only $300. He said he doesn't even go to any other webpage but NWA.com to book tickets. He flies every week too. You can't tell my loyalty isn't VERY important.

The only thing that pisses me off is that I was probably going to achieve gold status again even without the bonus and was looking forward to having a lot less competition for upgrades next year!  dopey

It's not a given that this promotion will result in more elites next year. Given the dismal state of business (and frequent) flying, the total number of elites at each carrier could even end up being fewer than last year, despite all the promotions....

Can someone help me figure this out? I just checked my account for the first time in a while. I flew a lot last year (for someone my age) and was just shy of Silver, I think I ended up with about 23,000 MQMs. On May 14th there is a post on my account of 8316 MQMs and the description reads: 9M UP TO TRPL. Any ideas what that means? I appreciate the random number of MQMs and am of course not complaining, but I just want to know why I got a weird number of miles and what the description means. Thanks.

This is the Double/Triple MQM promotion that DL was offering for spring travel (up until June 15) that was valid for certain fare classes.
