Supposedly, today KLM's first Boeing 747-400 refitted with PTV in Economy class entered revenue service.
Before the end of 2009 all 747's should be equipped with an AVOD system in all cabins.

While this is good news I am surprised that they are bothering to refit them , if I am not mistaken KLs oldest -400 is already 20 years old , when do they plan to start retiring them ?

Is this an all-pax 744 or a combi? Will the all-pax 744s get converted first before the combis or will they just upgrade them by random scheduling?

IIRC the ship is PH-BFN. An all-pax 744.

Very nice, it's always a pleasure to fly on the -400(M) but the product isn't as good as the other KLM Wibo's. Any info on the reg?

Nothing's worse then flying the same registration twice, except flying it 4 times..

since that is one of the younger ones ( only 16 years old , if I am not mistaken ) KL should be able to get a few more years service out of it to recoup the investment

I absolutely loved my experience on a KLM 747 last spring, even without PTV's.
EXCEPT that the seats themselves were HORRIBLE. I was sore after three hours- and had seven more hours to sit!
Did the PTV upgrade involve new seats as well? Better cushions?
I mean, we're talking these seats are nearly as bad as Continental's. And that's saying something- just read Flyertalk.

They will indeed get new seats, I guess they will be the same seats as the MD11 fleet.

Indeed, KL was supposed to start phasing them out by 2012 or so, but I believe they will be kept a little longer now. BFN was the aircraft that had the ground incident a while ago, where a tug dug itself into the belly of BFN. So I suppose they want to keep BFN as long as possible to recoup the investment of that repair..  Big grin . I believe it was close to a writeoff.

Yes, last year there was talk that KL wanted to retire their 744's before their D-check was due. The full-pax 744's was to be replaced by 77W's, and the combis by 787/A350. But I don't expect this to happen before 2015 now...

I flew a KL B772 last week with their great IFE and PTV's. In the in-flight magazine it mentioned that all aircraft now have this, apart from some 747's which are still being fitted. I thought this was stretching the truth slightly, but at least it seems they're onto them.

Out of interest - do the MD-11's really have PTVs now? I flew one in 2007 and it didn't.

You were a year early, they were fitted with PTV's last year. They all have PTV's now.

Indeed, IIRC after the summer, all 744's will have PTV's.

Indeed, the 787/a350 order is not due until next year IIRC, and delivery of the last two (fifth and sixth) 77W have been pushed back.

I remember posting about this, it was my first topic on A.net!

In March's Holland Herald it was announced, can't wait to see the new cabin! Do you know if the overhead lockers will be replaced (e.g. like QF's B744ER's)?

Which is interesting. I predict that the delay of the 788 and associated models (A350, A380) will cause more 744's to go through D-checks. Once a 744 is through a D-check, it's a lot more economical to keep it around. I don't know how often D-checks happen on a 744, but this little delay might be keeping these birds around for a long time yet.

Completely agree. The Y class seats feel like they're made of plywood.

So no plans for KL to order the A380 like AF have done? Would have thought with their feed into AMS the 380 would be a big bird suitable for some KL longhaul hub to hub ops?

Never had the pleasure of flying KL yet. Planning a trip to SE Asia next spring so might try and route from MAN via AMS on KL - anything to avoid LHR T3!

Do KL still operate 744 into SXM? Would love to try that on KL  Smile

Too bad LAX will not see a newly configured 74M with in seat IFE for quite a while. It's a shame they don't put the 77W on this route but then again, they make a lot of money on cargo out of LAX.

My understanding is that KLM will refit ALL 747's with PTV before the end of the year. So LAX will definitely see PTV equipped aircraft in the near future.
