I imagine one has to know the right people to sit in a jump seat. Are there other ways, short of begging shamelessly, to get a seat in the front office?

First ground school, then some 40-50 hours for your private license, 100 or so more hours, plus instrument rating and multi-engine rating will get you a commercial license. With a bit of luck, you'll get hired in no time by an airline, and there you go! seating in the front office!

Now on a serious tone. Search the topics, it always helps. This has been discussed extensively. Basically, if you are not an airline employee with jumpseat access (Pilot, dispatcher) or a Aviation inspector, you will not be allowed in the cockpit. (some exceptions are always mentioned)

Just ask. Each and every time you fly. Depending on the country and the airline, you might get lucky sometimes. These are the famous "exceptions".
