Delta's B737-300

Delta has a small number (for DL) of B737-300 aircraft, some came from Western as part of the merger, others were acquired second-hand (very untypical of DL) from Germania, and, I think, a few came from Western Pacific when that airline closed down. Any word on how long these aircraft will stay in the DL fleet? I am curious since its odd for an airline the size of DL to maintain such a small number of a type of aircraft in its fleet (I know that DL has many 732s and is rapidly receiving its new 738s, but the 733 is a different generation than each of those.) I also remember that at one time DL made a huge order for the 733 (50 definite + 50 options), about 5 were built (and were sold to other carriers from the assembly line) and then cancelled the balance of the order for financial reasons. Its a strange issue, I am curious to hear your thoughts. Will DL wait until all of the 72S aircraft are retired and only then worry about the 733? Will the MD90s or the 733s go first?

Delta will rid itself first of L1011s, 727s, MD-11s, and MD-90s before it looks to replace the 733s. Have a look at their website, in the section on their fleet. I imagine there is enough commonality between the 733s and Delta's other 737s to make them less uneconomical than some of the other aircraft. Note that Delta has also started repainting some of its 733s and MD-90s. They will be around for a while.

Also, have a look at the silly thread on 767-400 orders, and you will see what some of the other people in this forum think Delta will do in the near future.

Thanks, I also read the thread on the 764 order, and you will see that at about the same time, we said about the same thing.

Do you think DL will order a smaller variant of the 737NG to replace its 732/733 fleet at some point, or will the MD88 and 738 become the smallest DL airliners?

I would guess that Delta will order 737-600s, 737-700s, and 737-900s at some point later in the decade. This would allow them much greater flexibility in assigning appropriately sized aircraft to particular routes, and would not be significantly more expensive than just ordering one size of 737. I don't see the point in Delta purchasing aircraft smaller than the 736, though. Comair and ASA fly the regional jets.

Delta does not plan to start retiring the MD-90s until 2010 at the earliest. I talked to a Delta captain and he said that the MDs would be around until they retire them, but all future orders will be 737, 757/767, and 777.

Delta will start retiring the MD-11s once they have enough 777s in the stable. The 737-300 series is important for Delta's service to smaller cities, cities too big for just Delta Connection service, and too small for larger aircraft. My guess is that eventually all 737-300s will migrate over to the Delta Express side as they begin the process of completely going to the 737-800 series. I seriously doubt Delta would order the 600 series, seeing as they would more than likely shift service to one of ASA or Comair's CRJ700s once they come into the stable. More and more of Delta's mainline regional flights will go to Delta Connection airlines, and more cities will become just Delta Connection cities. Last year alone, Delta switched AGS and MGM from a mix of mainline and connection service to just Delta Connection service. More cities are to come, and in some cases, new North American destinations will be serviced by Delta Connection carriers initially, then will be turned over to mainline service once the demand warrants.
