DTW: Better Than Ft Lauderdale And St Louis

As you may have read in a previous post I returned yesterday to DTW from Ft Lauderdale via St. Louis on TWA.

DTW has taken plenty of hits as a bad airport perhaps even the worst in the USA. Hanging around Ft Lauderdale and St Louis for a few hours moved DTW ahead of them in my opinion.

Ft Lauderdale: dropped off in what seemed to be a back alley of some type but there was a luggage checkin. A long walk through a tunnel of some type finally led into the main terminal. Nothing to eat except some pizza stands and worse yet no maps to help find any. At the TWA gates no monitors to give any gate information. Watching the gate attendent fill a flight to LaGuardia was entertainment....I was waiting for a fight to break out. And of course no place to sit.

St. Louis: TBGY...out of most flavors...hot dog stand...no hot dogs. Gate area.....major zoo.

DTW may be bad...but not that bad...and the hot dogs are a buck cheaper too!

I agree that Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood airport is really crummy. The construction makes the place look like hell, lights hanging from the ceilings (not flourescent, they are like work lights). The baggage claim is hell too, they never put up what flight the bags came off of so you have to end up searching all the moving baggage claims to find your bags. I hope the place is better once construction is done. I have never been to STL so I cant comment.

DTW is going to lunge forward in December. It's going to put DIA and ORD to shame! Well, the NW area will. If you're flying AA, UA, WN, DL, etc., you'll still be leaving from the 1930's era terminal.

Ft Lauderdale is recovering from over 10 years of mismanagement, The BCAD has implemented a compleat overhaul of the airport. After it is done in the year 2005.
We will have gone from 35 gates in 3 terms To 76 gates in 5 terms.
A new 9,000ft runway will be built. And a new UPS hub will both be done in about 2007.

A330,

Wayne County is proposing to demolish the L.C. Smith terminal, and ALL of the concourse piers. We will be left with the J.M. Davey terminal functioning as a new 12 or so gate facility named "North Terminal". Dont know the plans for Michigan Berry terminal though.

I'm not sure about the Barry terminal either. I know with the new terminal NWA, Luftansa, British air, and maybe new contender Air France will all be having gates their. I know champion air, American Trans Air, also use gates at the international terminal(Barry) so they may still operate out of it. Does anyone know why NWA took over the DTW-AMS route from KLM. I know it used to be 2 nwa flights and 1 klm flight a day now it is 4 or 5 nwa's to AMS. I miss seeing KLM fly over my house 20mins after departure. Now i only see 2nwa, luftansa, and british air.

N312RC- The proposed North terminal will have more than 20 gates, not 12 gates. Just wanted to make that correct.
I have heard that NW wants to expand the new Midfield Terminal ALREADY by about 20 gates a year after it is built!!!! I am very skeptical on this. Can anyone confirm this? If so, NW must have some HUGE plans in store for DTW!!!!

Mah4546,

I believe the new FLL terminal is scheduled to open during the first 2 weeks of May. Just the finishing touches now, its going to be a beautiful terminal!

According to the Miami Herald report and FLL's website, the new terminal opens Sunday (the map, with an operating Terminal 1, is "effective 4/29")

Actually I just checked FLL's website, and it states that the terminal is open as of this moment.

They are still debating what to do with the north terminal (Davey). If you have been to DTW lately in the LC Smith terminal across from the Tequileria restaurant there is a display on the wall showing ideas of terminals and suggestions along with a video. The video shows plans for them knocking down the Davey terminal and building a completely new terminal for the other carriers.

As for International carriers, they will be using the midfield. I saw an artist's impression showing a British Airways jet parked at midfield along with KLM.

I was wondering what happened to Big Blue. I was by the airport the other day around 5 pm and was shocked that it wasn't parked in the international terminal. That really sucks if KLM has stopped flying to DTW.

Isn't the new NWA terminal for NWA, their partners, and international carriers? So, doesn't that mean Continental will be using the new terminal? Alliance partners usually share the same concourse/terminal.
