ACAPULCO, Mexico, April 24 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ --

Mexicana Airlines commemorates its 80th anniversary today in Acapulco, during the international tourism event, Tianguis, held at the Acapulco Convention
Center. An international press conference is being held at 11:00 a.m. (CST), in which the Executive VP of Sales & Marketing, Mr. Antonio Martinez Salinas will speak regarding the accomplishments and upcoming projects of the airline.
Mexicana Airlines was founded in 1921, making it the 4th oldest airline in the world, and the oldest operating airline in North America. Mexicana set a precedent as the pioneer of international travel between the United States and Mexico, when Charles Lindbergh flew
between Brownsville, Texas and Tampico, Mexico in 1929. Mexicana currently operates a modern fleet of jet equipment comprised of 7 Boeing 757s, 21 Boeing 727s, 19 Airbus A320s, and 12 Fokker 100s. It also offers over 350 destinations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America.
Mexicana Airlines offers more non-stop service from Mexico to the UnitedStates and Canada than many other airlines, as it services 13 gateways in
North America.
In its commitment to grow at an international level, Mexicana Airlines joined Star Alliance, the largest airline network at a worldwide level in July 2000. Through Star Alliance and its seamless connections, Mexicana is now
able to offer its passengers service from 894 airports in 129 countries. Also, in affiliation with its Star Alliance partners, United Airlines and Air Canada, Mexicana is able to offer through its code-share network, service from an additional 68 gateways in the United States and 7 additional gateways in
Canada.
Mexicana Airlines has been recognized as the leading airline of Mexico, Central and Latin America through various awards received throughout the year,
recognizing the outstanding service and quality offered by this airline. Some of these awards are:

-- Best Airline to Central and Latin America, by World Travel Awards, Mexicana has been the recipient of this award for 5 consecutive years
from 1997 to 2001.
-- Best Airline to Central America 2001, by Airline Quality Research in England. Also received 4 out of 5 stars for the outstanding service onboard its Executive Class cabin, and for its safety systems and comfortable seating.
-- Best Airline to Mexico 2001, Latin Finance, April 2001
Latin Finance, a widely distributed financial publication in the United States, Mexico and Latin America, selected Mexicana as the best airline to Mexico, based on a readers' poll sent to all of its subscribers.
-- Double Eagle Award, by the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, Mid-America Chapter This award was given in recognition of the role that Mexicana has played in strengthening air transportation and commercial ties between the United States and Mexico.

As for upcoming developments, Mexicana has announced that effective November 2001, it will begin servicing Midway Airport in the Chicago area.
That would give Mexicana two gateways in Illinois, as it currently offers service from O'Hare International Airport.
Mexicana, in an effort to also meet the needs of passengers who prefer to book their reservations electronically through the internet, has expanded its
website with updated information, and quick access to its booking engine.Beginning in May 2001, Mexicana is launching its newly restructured internet system which will offer faster access. Mexicana offers Mex-E-Saver online fares, for those passengers who are looking for discounted fares at considerable savings, for travel from 7 days up to 30 days, depending on availability of seats.
Among other partnerships throughout this year,
Mexicana is also affiliating with Western Union in the United States and Canada. This means that effective immediately, passengers who do not have a credit card for an instant purchase of a ticket when calling Mexicana's Reservations Center in the U.S. can now pay for their tickets through any Western Union office.
Mexicana will have direct access to Western Union's directory of over 33,000 offices in the U.S. and Canada, to advise the passenger which one is closest to his/her location. Additionally, when a Mexicana ticket is paid through the Western Union office, the service fee of $11.95 will be waived. The passenger will have the option of setting up the ticket with Mexicana as an electronic ticket, as a ticket placed on will-call at the airport or it can be mailed directly to the passenger.
The above is an example of Mexicana's new product, "Lo Nuestro", where it aims to meet and assist ethnic passengers traveling on Mexicana and
arriving/departing into/from the United States and Canada. The object is to also help these passengers feel comfortable and at ease through the booking
process and ticket purchase at all of Mexicana's ticket offices and ticket counters, as sometimes, language is a barrier for them. As Mexicana is comprised of fully bilingual employees, its purpose is to help these
passengers with their traveling needs.
Additionally, as part of Mexicana's development strategies to bring added value benefits to its customers, an alliance has been created with MasterCard International. As a result, soon, all MasterCard cardholders will start accumulating Frecuenta frequent flyer points for any of their MasterCard purchases. By mid-July of this year, a state of the art VIP Lounge will be inaugurated at Mexico City's International Airport, which will be operated by both companies and will provide unparalleled services to top tier customers. It is expected to become one of the finest lounges in the airline industry.
In commemoration of Mexicana's 80th anniversary, MasterCard will be offering additional benefits to Mexicana and MasterCard customers.
"To be affiliated to such an important company with global presence allows us to offer our customers a wide array of benefits," commented Mr. Juan Pina,
MasterCard's International Senior Vice President for Latin America andthe Caribbean.
Another important affiliation will be with Banamex, which is considered tobe the most important banking institution of Mexico.
"There is no doubt that Mexicana continues to grow at an impressive rate. The amount of passengers transported system-wide has grown steadily for the past 5 years, at an average rate of 7.4%. Mexicana carried over 3 million passengers last year between Mexico and North America, an increase of 15% from the previous year. It carried a total of almost 9 million passengers system wide. Needless to say, as we celebrate our 80th year of operation, we are very proud of all of Mexicana's accomplishments and our goal is to continue our expansion in effort to meet all of our passengers' traveling needs. We also want to thank our passengers and travel agencies for their loyalty, and for making us their preferred international carrier," commented Mr. Fernando Flores, Mexicana's CEO and President.
Mexicana Airlines currently offers 13 gateways in the United States and Canada which consist of: Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Las Vegas, Denver, San Antonio, Miami, Orlando, Chicago, New York, Montreal and Toronto. It also offers service to 30 destinations in Mexico, with Mexico City as its main hub, and 7 countries in Central, South America and the Caribbean, which are Panama, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Argentina,Colombia and Cuba.

Good report Latin.

Where did you get it???
I thought Mexicana will be celebrating in July because the airline was founded on july the 12, 1921 as Compañía Mexicana de Transportación Aerea (CMTA). Also to make an update, Mexicana is operating a brand new B757-2Q8 (msn 30044) N765MX making them 8 in the fleet. I will love to fly on it. Thanks for the report

Rojo:

I got it from Airliners.net up to the minute news early this morning. You can now find it the news all over the place practicaly.

Chepos:

How do you know you flew on Mexicana when you were only 1? You must have flown on the San Juan-Mexico route in the early 80's. That was a popular route for a long time during that decade but is not the case anymore. So that must have been your first flight, huh? It's wonderful to know such things.

I flew AeroMexico when I was around 4 years old in 1981. I still recall many memories of that flight. As a matter of fact, thats the reason I got hooked into commercial aviation.

Best regards,
A. Diaz
