This is great news for Baghdad!

How many regular commercial flights are there to Baghdad and what airlines fly it?

The GF crews must be extremly happy to fly there.... there will certainly be no night-stops and drinks at the hotel pool for them.... the opinions on www.pprune.org are not very positive.

Actually not many. According to Wikipedia, these are the airlines and destinations from Baghdad. On Amadeus, only the Turkish Airlines flight TK1202/TK1203 is available, with very high fares! Even the Royal Jordanian flight from/to Amman RJ810/811 seems not to be available through Amadeus and not even through RJ booking website.

Some of these airlines just seem to offer unscheduled charter flights.

-Cham Wings Airlines: Damascus
-Flying Carpet: Beirut
-Iraqi Airways: Amman, Athens, Basra, Beirut, Cairo, Damascus, Dubai, Erbil, Istanbul-Atatürk, London-Stansted [begins 6 August], Mosul, Stockholm-Arlanda, Sulaymaniyah, Tehran-Imam Khomeini
-Ishtar Airlines: Dubai
-Jupiter Airlines: Dubai
-Gulf Air: Bahrain [begins 1 September]
-Gryphon Airlines: Kuwait City
-Mahan Air: Tehran-Imam Khomeini
-MCA Airlines: Stockholm-Arlanda
-Royal Jordanian: Amman
-Turkish Airlines: Istanbul-Atatürk
-Blue Wings: Düsseldorf

Let's see how GF crew deal with this, already used to fly to destinations which may not be very pleasant, as for example Peshawar. GF hired cabin crew abroad, and recruiting is done in cities like Barcelona.

There is no Iraqi Airways at STN. I am not aware of any imminent service either.

Actually there was a recent press release for Iraqi Airways flights to London for the 6th of August, but it seems that these will not start today. Even Stansted is not mentioned here, but is mentioned on Wikipedia.

Iraqi Airways to operate regular flights between Baghdad, London
July 29, 2009 - 09:33:38
BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraqi Airways, the national carrier of Iraq, on Wednesday said that it will operate regular flights between Baghdad and London as of August 6.

“On Wednesday, Iraqi Airways announced that it will operate three flights a week between Baghdad and London as of August 6,” according to a statement published on the official web site of the Iraqi Ministry of Transportation and received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
Last month, the director of the Civil Aviation Authority in Iraqi Airways, Sobhi al-Shibani, revealed an agreement to open an air route between Iraq and London.

The flight will be 1H45M so it will most likely be a turnaround for the crew.No layover
Great to see GF trying this route. It will be intresting to see ig QR/EY/EK follow

GF (like with everything else they do) is again too late in the market. They should have done this a LONG LONG time ago. Perhaps this was the brainstorm of the new ex-RJ head who is now at GF? He managed to turn around GF and Baghdad did well for RJ ... same magic, same logic at GF? Besides, they have to use their 320's somewhere.

Saludos,
A.

Great news! GF has, for once, pioneered a new route ahead of the rest. I expectt that once a new UAE-Iraq bilateral is signed, we'll see significant services from EK, EY and G9.

SDA. BGW is to Baghdad what NYC is to New York and LON to London.

That's a BIG news, but let's not forget that TK has been flying to Baghdad for some months now. Security in operations must be a headache...

If we speak of yields, it's a pity GF doesn't fly to IAD or JFK for instance. TK is pumping a lot of the lucrative UK-US to Iraq market.

Time will tell.

Indeed it wasn't at STN yesterday, but I do recall the press release saying it would start thrice-weekly on the 6th Aug. Clearly, it didn't happen!  Smile However, it will be good when it does.

Don't hold your breath. I haven't even heard so much as a whisper about a start any time soon.

Surprisingly, there is a schedule announced on Iraqi Airways website for a London flight, via Istanbul. The website is http://www.iq-airways.com/ (only available in Arabic, but you can use Google web translator so that you can browse this site in English or in another language)

The timetable is:
Flight IA223: Baghdad Departure: 12:00 - Istanbul Arrival: 15:00
Flight IA623: Istanbul Departure: 18:00 - London Arrival: 20:30

Flight IA624: London Departure: 22:30 - Istanbul Arrival: 04:30
Flight IA224: Istanbul Departure: 05:30 - Baghdad Arrival: 08:30

I wonder if these flights finally take place, if the plane used for the IST-LON may be a leased frame.

It has three terminals, each with 6 jetways, a total of 18 jetways. Apparently one of the terminals has been refurbished. Source for these pictures are pictures available and uploaded on Google Satellite Maps.

Would feel quite uncomfortable operating a flight to Baghdad, so I hope not. Flip side though, if the flight ends up having great yields and helps us through these tough times....

Yes, and from what I've heard around the rumor mill, a majority of those GF A320s are flying empty right now...

It would be nice to see things continue to improve in Iraq to the point where they could build out a fourth terminal and finish the parking garage!
