How Does FX Use DCA Vs IAD?

I walked by a FedEx truck day and remembered that they run out of both DCA and IAD - which doesn't make sense to me along the lines of the old "packages don't care how you route them" logic. Is it just that they fill the 757 at DCA with whatever fits/the critical stuff that has go early and then IAD does the normal priority stuff?

Agree, no sense at all. Don't they use MEM as a hub? So serving two airports in the same metro area has no sense.

They do so for the same reason both UPS and FDX serve ONT, LAX, BUR, LGB, SNA. The ability to have pick up times 1 hour later and delivery times 1 hour earlier by cutting back on drive times to/from the airport is huge for these carriers.

Ol' FDX 1557, the morning 752 ferry from DCA to IAD, just completed its trip. Do they have any seats to sell for DC folks working at IAD?

Not in the know, but my guess is that it's so hard to get trucks into downtown DC from IAD early in the morning (horrible traffic, restrictive no-truck routes, etc.) it's about the only way to serve the DC customers...fly the 752 from MEM to DCA, then ferry it back to IAD.

A classic case of bad transportation infrastucture/traffic management. Maybe once the Silver Line of the DC Metro gets out to Dulles, they can attach some freight-only cars to a couple of rush hour trains and eliminate the need to fly into DCA and then ferry to IAD. Sure!

HA that would be amazing but I doubt them actually doing that. That does sound like a good idea though if they could figure out the logistics of decouoling the cars and putting them on a siding during operation.

I live in downtown DC, less than ten minutes by car from DCA, but my FedEx packages come from Landover, which is much closer to BWI than either DCA or IAD. Therefore I don't think the usage of either DCA or IAD has to do with downtown DC. I think it's probably just difficult to get stuff around NoVA by road, for the reasons mentioned above.

I picked up a package yesterday heading to zip 20008 in DC but didn't pay attention to the airport routing.....

We do have some weird routings out there. I.E...most Kentucky stuff....including LEX stuff is routed through SDF. Wouldn't want to be an RTD on that route.

I also pick up from a few paper companies and they ship to the UP of Michigan...and of course all that stuff is routed through MKE...onto the caravans.

Will keep my eye out the next time I see a DC shipment....

I see that this morning, FDX 1557, the Tuesday through Friday 757 MEM-DCA flight that has for some time made a ferry run on to IAD (anywhere from 5 to 13 minutes worth of flying), instead flew out of DCA to IND.

Anybody know if this is the new route for 1557 out of DCA?

That's what I am thinking on further reflection - that the DCA flight probably has the uber priority stuff as first outta town and then they fill up the big planes at IAD and fly them out as they fill up.

Its nearly impossible any time of day. No trucks are allowed on 66 at any time.

They serve most of the city from BWI via their hub on Eckington Place NE.
