Daytona Beach Airlines?

Does anyone know if any new airlines are/have been looking at Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB)?

I have flown on both US Air and Delta down and was hoping that a new airline would pick up a new route? When I was down there a few months ago, there was a Jet Blue A320 sitting on the ramp for a few days. It would be nice if Jet Blue would start.

Any ideas?

Here is a picture of the A320. Sorry for the heat waves and crummy shot.

Thank you,

James

I'm pretty sure Jetblue has bigger markets in its sights than DAB, especially with MCO, a major player for B6, just an hour and half drive time away and JAX to the north.

Jetblue is more likely to start service to cities like St. Louis, Dallas, Indianapolis, Detroit, etc, etc before DAB even gets thought of.

I think AirTran's short lived experience at DAB is a good indicator of future DAB expansion.

While DBIA has been trying to get B6 in there for a while, I doubt it will ever happen. However, DAB is a diversion airport for B6, and they use it quite often. That's what that picture is of, most likely. However, since you said it was there for a few days, possible charter? or mechanical diversion?

Thanks! I am just hoping for a non-stop flight to Daytona. When it is almost faster to drive from Dulles (IAD) than go thru Atlanta (ATL) or Charlotte (CLT) its pretty bad. It took nearly 12 hrs to fly down for orientaion last fall. It (via mapquest) takes 13 hr to drive from IAD to DAB
I know that MCO is only an hour or so drive.... but it would help out.

Thanks,

James

It shouldn't take you 12 hours. It only took 5 for me to fly EWR-ATL-DAB last year. Sure, you may run up against some bad weather from time to time, but you can't really help that.

I am talking about total trip time.... flight time was like 2.5 hrs. We had to be stopped in CLT for a few hours for a maint. problem on the connection CRJ and we had a health delay on the imbound at the gates at CLT. Delta was much better it took only about 8 hrs total trip time.

I agree, but when I flew direct it took 2hrs 15minutes IAD to ORL, but over flew DAB st 2 hrs.

I am just curous if someone will pick up DAB again.

Ok, so you got hosed on that one trip. Things happen. Doesn't mean it happens all the time.

Quoting My1le (Reply 5):

Shouldn't even take that long. You can do IAD-ATL-DAB in just under 4 hours scheduled time. You can do IAD-CLT-DAB in just over 4 hours scheduled time.

Not in this economy. It's a leisure market that is served by a much larger leisure market just an hour away. That's not a recipe for good yields.

MCO is a JetBlue focus city and it is approximately 1 hour drive time from DAB. The same situation exists for MLB.

MCO is the "400 pound gorilla in the room" with DAB and MLB. Throw in SFB's cheap flights from Allegiant (which is only 30 minutes from DAB and an hour from MLB) and you can see the problem.

It would probably do more good for the citizens of Volusia and Brevard Counties to have their local governments set up a high-speed rail system to MCO than to continue to dump more money into their airports.

Too bad you weren't in town a few years ago. We had UAX non-stop to IAD for a short period of time (less than a year, I think. I don't really know when it started since I didn't start ERAU until Fall 2006).

Was this sometime in April? I vaguely remember that B6 had somebody from HQ down to ERAU to give a lecture or something. Or maybe it was a bunch of HR people to put something on for a career fair or how to present yourself as a professional pilot.

In any case, I believe they flew people down to visit the school (IIRC)

They did fly people down, but they didn't fly them into DAB. The people who came weren't that important. They flew them into MCO (which is where their training campus is), and drove the 50-60 minutes to the school.

B6 only comes into DAB on diversions or charters.

To put it simply (because we all know we can get really down and dirty with this stuff): DAB is a very small market. DL and a few others own it. Unless they move out - no one else is coming in.

Many airlines have come and gone. All the current ones have downgraded their schedules like crazy. DL used to have 6 in and out mainlines daily, only 2 years ago. Now what do they have left? 3-4 regionals + 1 mainline? It's said. But I'm glad I'm not still there. Sorry DAB - you may have been my first - but you're nothing compared to others.

Why, that is what the beach is there for. But i am a PADI Scuba diver so being at the beach for me is a different experience that most will have.

Yeah... I heard about that flight. I would be happy with UA re-opening that service!

Thanks.

As a resident of the Daytona Beach area, and being only 15 minutes from DAB, here is what is going on now...
Delta Airlines provides eight daily flights between Daytona Beach, FL and Atlanta. This consists of 1x M80, 1x CR7, and 6x CRJ.

US Airways provides two daily flights between Daytona Beach, FL and Charlotte. This consists of 2x CRJ.

We also have charter operations by AirGate Aviation that provides flights to the Bahamas.

For the past two years, DL has only flown a 757 on the DAB-ATL leg during the time of Spring Break, since Daytona Beach is one of the top ten Spring Break destinations. I will say that fares are on a downward trend at DAB, especially with Delta. I booked a trip on July 9 between Daytona Beach and Baltimore/Washington for August 18-21 and the trip was only $175.39 after tax. My mother booked DAB-LGA r/t and it was only about $160 after tax. Despite the lack of nonstops here in Daytona Beach, fares are becoming more reasonable, compared to this time last year, where fares were heading up to $300+ r/t after tax.

You are totally correct. I remember my first trip was like $600 for two tickets. I am looking at the fares now... and they are right around the $170 mark.....

Didn't DAB shoot itself in the foot with the UA service, causing it to end? Something about United being POed at DAB & pulling out because they gave FL incentives to operate into DAB from BWI while giving nothing to UA for flying into IAD?

Do they open up routes during spring break time?
