At a dinner party in Manila the other day several people were talking about Philippine Airlines being on the market and that the most likely buyer was a Middle Eastern airline. Has anyone heard anything to confirm this?

Have not heard that. I did hear that Philippine Airlines is looking to recapitalize by issuing more shares. Maybe the Middle Eastern carrier would help recapitalize the airline?

It is not state owned - when in doubt - go to the source
The airline is owned by a Philippines holding company with Lucio Tan as the individual behind the company according to Wikipedia.
In late 2007 the airline emerged from a nine year long bankruptcy process with a decent profit, but there has been some concern recently that the airline did not report a profit earlier this year.

This will happen either way in the future as more 77Ws will enter the fleet, and when the 744 is eventually replaced ,with even more 77Ws or other aircraft, the tech-stop at Guam will cease.

I have serious doubts as to the truth of this story. IIRC, the Philippines is wary of foreign ownership of ANYTHING, let alone the de facto national airline (yes its privatized, but most Filipinos still view it as the national airline). The Philippines is one of the few nations on earth that restrict foreign ownership of land; probably a good idea since China would likely purchase most of the arable land on the market if it were to go on sale.
Count me in the very skeptical camp.

Despite 77Ws, GUM and 744s/343s will continue to meet unless the Philippines is reclassified from Cat II status by the FAA.
I could also see PR loading as much cargo as possible during the winter months on the 77Ws which will then require a tech stop.

Thanks for the Info the Tech-Stops are really good for Guam PAL is in and out fast and the airport gets much needed landing fees for 744's.. Will be great to see 77W's doing tech stops .. Its only on the USA-Guam-Manila leg so I dont think the PAX mind much..MNL-USA is always non-stop...
Its Also nice because special PAX like Pacman and President GMA can stop by Guam much more than they would otherwise...{probably not at all if the flights were non-stop} GMA had to cancel her latest Guam 'stopover visit' to get back to MNL fast for Pres Cory's Funeral....

I understand your point here, but I said in the future. Even the Cat II won't be lifted this year as PAL was hoping for, I seriously doubt that it still won't be lifted around 2013-2014 or so.

Maybe the pax don't care much, but like you say: PAL needs to spend extra cash on this stop.

If the tech stops are still around for long, then you better hope that they are not deployed on the current red-eye flight.

I work for ASIG during the night and we usually had the tech stops to deal with as far as water and lav service is concerned. However, since the summer started, tech stops have become a rarity. On very rare occassions, we'll have a 744 enroute from LAX stop by although the flight from SFO barely ever stops by. During the midpoint of summer the flight to and from HNL made some stops here. Besides the 5x service from MNL during the week, no other PR jets have stopped by.

The funny thing is that flight was supposed to land here last week but because of poor visibility, the flight had to make a diversion to SPN for fuel and re-service. Even if GMA wasn't rushed by Cory's funeral, she still would have been diverted Saipan due to the system that became Typhoon Morakot. Since then, we've had no tech-stops from PR. Maybe one of these days they'll stop and make another visit.
