When Did United Get Rid Of The Friend Ship?

United inaugurated the "flying U" symbol in 1974. I am curious how long it took to repaint the planes from the "4 star Friend Ship" scheme to the triple stripe scheme. I took my first flight in 1982 (DC-10). Is there a chance it was a Friend Ship in the 4 star scheme?

No chance at all. By 1982 all Ual planes were in the triple stripe scheme.

As of 1997, at O'hare when you looked at the departure areas it would say: United Flt 137
San Francisco
757 Friendship.

Don't know if this is related to the question but I always thought it was interesting that they still addressed the entire fleet as friendship.

They got rid of the 'Friend Ship' when that UA flight attendant referred to passengers as THE ENEMY on the Late Show with David Letterman.

If UA started the scheme in 1974, then what the FA said on David Letterman had nothing to with it since that show didn't come until the early '80's.

I think it was when UAL's service started to drop in quality and the business men/women had refered to them as the "enemyship from hell". That really will make good PR on the Wall ST Journal.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy LOL LOL LOL!!!!!!

To actually answer your question...I have seen pictures of United planes in the Friendship scheme as late as 1978, but I think that's about as late as you would have seen them. Airlines' fleets were not as big back then, so repainting didn't take as many years as it does today. By 1982, all the airplanes were definitely in the orange, red and blue.
