United inaugurated the "flying U" symbol in 1974. I am curious how long it took to repaint the planes from the "4 star Friend Ship" scheme to the triple stripe scheme. I took my first flight in 1982 (DC-10). Is there a chance it was a Friend Ship in the 4 star scheme?

I think it was when UAL's service started to drop in quality and the business men/women had refered to them as the "enemyship from hell". That really will make good PR on the Wall ST Journal. LOL LOL LOL!!!!!!

To actually answer your question...I have seen pictures of United planes in the Friendship scheme as late as 1978, but I think that's about as late as you would have seen them. Airlines' fleets were not as big back then, so repainting didn't take as many years as it does today. By 1982, all the airplanes were definitely in the orange, red and blue.
