A few days ago I took a red-eye out of LAX to YYZ. There were no lines in front of the gate agents, I cleared security in about a minute, and the terminal was essentially empty. Which sort of got me thinking, what airport has the highest volume of late night departures and arrivals?

I don't care about cargo ops out of ANC or anything and I figure late night would be from 1030 to 0500 local.

My guess is LAX because of the red-eyes but I'm still curious.

LAX and SFO have a good number of late night departures for "red eye" domestic as well as long haul international departures. However, if you consider all cargo operations, then the top airports would be MEM, IND, SDF, CVG, OAK, EWR, PHL, ONT.

LAS is still up there...but given that US has pulled down there so much and WN & G4 do not do red eyes, it has slipped a bit recently. Based on the hour by hour activity on flightaware...it looks like LAX & SFO are the hotbeds of redeye flying in the USA. Interestingly, it looks like JFK sees quite a bit of departure activity between midnight and 0500...mainly to Asia, the West Indies and Latin America.

Guam is one of the very few U.S. airports that operates round the clock arrivals and departures..and also almost every type B 727F,737,747,757,767,777 & A300, 320,330,340...the slow time is from 0800 to 1400.

ANA is operating the 747-400D (Domestic) HND-GUM for Aug/Sep...hope we see more flight to HND much better than NRT for most pax.

HNL has a massive block of late night departures to the mainland. On flights to the mainland, you'll pretty much leave early in the morning, possibly at noon (to make it to the West Coast by 9pm) 4-5pm to nonstop it to ORD or, like most everyone else, between 10pm and midnight to redeye it to the West Coast and connect to all points elsewhere.

NRT also seems to have a decent number of late evening flights throughout Asia and to the U.S.

Most airports in the Middle East have most of their European arrivals and departures by European carriers late at night/early in the morning in order to properly time with connections to/from the Americas.

Examples include CAI, BEY, AMM, DAM, etc.

One such flight flight was on Lufthansa from BEY back in 2003. The departure was around 3AM. Arrived in FRA around 6AM just as the sun began to rise. I then connected on Lufthansa's flight to DEN.

JFK gets a fair number of late-night (12am-2am) arrivals from various places, and has a few departures around that time as well.

IND is definitely very, very active late at night and through the very early morning. If you read the IND FlightAware page from 11:30pm-ish to about 2am, all you'll see for arrivals and departures are FedEx flights. Sometimes you'll see two flights scheduled to arrive at the same time. It's pretty interesting to see all of the flights lined up on approach into IND on the FlightAware map for the late night push.

I would approximate about 20-30 individual FedEx flights operate into IND late at night, IND being the regional hub.

In terms of passenger numbers, probably one of the major mid-east/south asia airports like Dubai, Delhi, or Mumbai.

In terms of number of flights, probably LAX. Multiple red-eyes to nearly every east coast and mid-west destination (I've flown a LAX-DFW on DL several years back. It wasn't fun, even though everybody slept the whole way, and I felt like crap for the next two days.)

I don't know if this is still true, but three years ago, AF and KLM had flights that arrived in CAI at around 1230 and 130ish, and departed at 200 and 330 respectively, getting into Paris and Amsterdam at sunrise

India and Middle East have the highest percentage on average. As most of us know, this is due to arrival times/connection opportunities at the other end. It's really just a byproduct of geography.

JFK... not so many, really. Though I am "fortunate" to regularly operate one of the airport's latest departures... DL 383 to Georgetown, Guyana.

That's flight "tree-eight-tree" as the Guyanese say it.

(Just back from GEO in fact. As usual we were full in both directions. Not a single non-rev made it on today's return flight.)

I'm curious... excluding cargo, are there any * other * scheduled flights from Kennedy between 01:00 and 05:00?

From all airlines? I think LAX and SFO just might be tied. On the other side, I've arrived at ORD between 4:30am and 5:00am a dozen times, and there are about 20 flights that arrive in Concourse C at the same time. Washington-Dulles gets a lot in the early A.M. too.

The Delta JFK-POS flight leaves at 0100. Caribbean Airlines has a JFK-POS at 0115 as well. China Eastern has a 0145 JFK-PVG flight, Air Jamaica a 0215 JFK-KIN, TACA a 0345 JFK-SAP and a 0350 JFK-SAL and Mexicana has a 0100 JFK-MEX.

What about PER? Obviously wouldn't have more flights than DXB etc, but peak time is around 2200-0200 for red eye domestics to SYD, MEL & BNE, and also international flights on EK, SA, QF, JQ, SQ, MH & MK to and from various points in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

I think CM departs (or used to depart) JFK around 0400 wintertime, 0500 summertime.

Definitely not PHX, there are only 8 or 9 flights that leave after 10 pm. LAS, in contrast, has around 32.
