Miami will take bids next month from contractors for the A380 gate project, converting gate J17 in the north concourse to an A380 gate, a project now underway thanks to a commitment from an unnamed airline to fly the A380 to MIA (I have no doubt that this airline is Lufthansa). MIA has put off starting the project until a firm, in-writing commitment to schedule A380 services to Miami was completed by Air France or Lufthansa.

No idea what the timeline is for this project. How long does an A380 gate retrofit take?

It sounds like it's only some relatively minor work on the passenger loading bridges. The ramp area itself is ready and has the lines painted (J17A, closes J17 and limits J15 to a 767-300 or smaller).

It'll be neat to see what the airport does to convert a gate in Concourse H for Air France if/when they commit an A380 to MIA.

Quoting MAH4546 (Thread starter):
converting gate J17 in the north concourse

I am confused .... Wouldn't that be the south concourse?

Wasn't J recently opened? Seems like it would have been easier to plan for it up front (if they could have secured the commitment) rather than retrofitting a gate in a brand new terminal.
