United's Transcons From IAD

For the IAD-LAX/SFO/DEN flights that operate with 777s or 767s, are these international widebodies rotating off of international flying or domestic widebodies? If the former, has United switched to 767s on IAD-LAX/SFO since those have the new F & J seats?

Is there any different service on these flights? They don't sell it as three-class, correct?

Both, some are domestic widebodies and some are tag ons to international flights. For example tomorrow...
IAD-LAX both 777s are 3 cabin aircraft
IAD-SFO the 777 and 763 flights are 2 cabin aircraft
IAD-DEN the 777 and 763 flights are 3 cabin aircraft

UA sells the three class aircraft as three class aircraft even on domestic flights. Domestic J class is offered on around 20 daily flights (excluding P.S.)

Given the choice, and if you're flying Business, go out of your way to ensure you're on the new International fleet. My 767 was amazingly comfy, the entertainment system actually worked. Only think lacking was food to match the experience.

How is the service on these flights? Just a standard domestic F or J with the comfy international seats (on the 3 cabin aircraft)?

Would love to snag a 3-cabin re-configured 767 on IAD-DEN!

How do domestic F and J differ on a route like IAD-LAX/SFO?

Essentially, yes. It's just a standard domestic F or J meal service, not the multicourse and slightly more elaborate international meal service.

Pax just have the nicer seats and pillows/blankets. In UA First, the seats have the personal movie tape players in additional to the personal video screens.

Speaking from first-hand experience, a few years back F did get a slightly more elaborate meal service with more courses (separate salad course, for example, and the sundae).

How does it compare to the service that American offers on its transcon flights in F or J (on non-LAX/SFO - JFK flights)?

It is different than the meal service on p.s. flights, correct?

Any time a three class aircraft is used on a domestic flight J is sold as J class....those aircraft are normally only scheduled on intra-hub flights.

 checkmark

It's actually sort of a problem when they sub a three class aircraft for a two class aircraft, as those booked in F on the two class aircraft will be booked, if space is available, in J on the three class. On a three class aircraft with the old cabin, the J and domestic F cabins are almost identical, but a lot of passengers don't understand why their F ticket doesn't entitle them to F.

The day I flew the IAD-DEN route (July 18th) there were still bugs in the system on my 767-- some AVOD's were working, and some were not (mine kept going black). Some of the seats had pieces of plastic trim falling off -- and some of the trim pieces managed to get kicked up the aisle. Up front in first class, passengers were offered a choice of breakfast entrees. In Business we were offered only a fruit plate and all the coffee and tea we could drink.

Given the price difference from economy plus (and me using my own money) I've got to admit I was disappointed.  cry

I am still surprised UA gives free headphones, however that is ending in the fall..

Yeah. 3 Cabin F domestically gets the same F service as 2 cabin F.
C class domestically gets a stupid fruit plate for breakfast, or cold options for lunch/dinner. The service is worse in C than 2 (or 3 cabin) F, and that's saying something.  Silly

There was an anouncement that UA would stop give out free headsets; passengers could still use their own for free. UA hasn't set a firm date for this yet.

I think it makes sense; a lot of people bring their own anyway and this would probably save some money becaue of cleaning and sorting the headsets after each flight.

On a recent AC flight, an anouncement was made by flight attendants for passengers to use their own headsets.

If the ticket was booked F class (paid full F or discounted F fare) then that ticket is valid for First. However, if the purchased ticket was economy, (Y, H, M, etc) and used miles to upgrade into First Class, then this is what happen. No double upgrade is allowed. Therefore in case of a sub from a 2 class to 3 class cabin, the F ticket (pay economy fare and use miles to upgrade) would only entitle that ticket to C and not F.

United haven't decided on the actual dates yet. However, they will still load a limited amount on the flight for those who didn't bring one or have one. I personally, use my own 98% of the times when I travel.
