TWA Or AA From STL To SAN In 1996?

Hey guys. My first post, have loved A.net for a while, finally decided I should join.

Anyway, one question that's been bugging me. My first flight ever was a non-stop from STL to SAN around May of 1996. I was 12, so my memory lacks one key detail. What airline would I have flown on? I do know it was an MD-80 type, because I remember the 2/3 seat config, and pretty sure the 3 seats were on the right side. I suspect it was TWA, obviously because of their hub, but could it have been somebody else? Thanks in advance!

Most certainly was TWA - AA didn't have much of anything other than hub flights out of STL or SAN back then.

Possible that Southwest also did the route, but definitely not on an MD-80.

Welcome to ANet, IlliniCMI....

If it was May of 1996, it was most certainly TWA.

According to the May 1996 OAG, the only carrier operating STL-SAN nonstop was TWA.

There were three daily nonstops, all on MD-80s.

9:00am-11:03am TW 203
11:45am-1:44pm TW 315
4:55pm-6:55on TW 99

Hope this helps!

Welcome to Anet IlliniCMI.

I was wondering if there is direct service now from STL to SAN?

Looks like there is now, once daily on an AA M83, but didn't I see that AA was cutting a bunch of flights from STL this winter?

AA is pulling the single n/s on 11/19; they are the only n/s cx in the market. There is definitely O&D traffic in the market that should support at least 1 n/s so the hope is that someone might step forward and fill the void. (WN, to me, makes the most sense but who knows...)

I too welcome you to A.net, IlliniCMI!

Welcome to ANET!

Yes TWA was the airline you flew STL-SAN on the MD80

STL-SAN will be have direct flights offered by WN, however I assume you meant NON STOP (which WN does not offer right now) and as already mentioned, served by AA right now until the route is dropped.

What a shame, but oh well.

Does the illini in your screen name come from the amtrak route, The Illini?

No not specifically, more in general for the school here that I love so much! Although I do live about 2 blocks from the tracks, so I hear it go by often.

Your profile lists you as from Southern Illinois, but you asked this guy if the "Illini" in his screen name came from the Amtrak route (and not the obvious University of Illinois, which is in Champaign, of which the airport code is CMI which is in his screenname)??

Sorry to nitpick, but that just seems very odd.  Smile

Carry on.

We Salukis (SIU-C in Southern Illinois) tend to ignore other Universities in Illinois  devil

Especially when Bruce Weber left SIU for them...*grumbles*

Kidding!!! Well I am an avid Train fan also so when I read Illini my first thought was the Train and not the University especially since his group isn't exactly of the average college student, even though it says grad student...

and the poor guy, we are picking out his profile in public LOL

Anyhow..yes back on topic...

Hey, at least my first thread ever on A.net topped 10 posts! At least I guess I'm formally introduced...

I've got season basketball tickets if you're interested in seeing Bruce again, Alex...

Back semi on-topic, did all the TWA MD-80's merge into AA's fleet?

I Believe they all did, because prior to the merger American had a fleet of over 250 MD-80's and after the merger they had a fleet of 350 MD-80's, TWA had 100 of those so it must be that they all went to American. Now the combined MD-80 fleet at American is down to 270 aircraft.

Ben Soriano

PS: I flew STL-SAN with American in 2005. It is needless to say it was an MD-80.

I went to High School with his two girls, Hannah and Christy Weber so I tend to keep in touch when I can with those two. But I'll keep it in mind buddy!

As stated yes every single TWA MD80 went to AA at the time of the merger/buyout, but some MD80's may have left AA's fleet by now too.
