That's good news for LS after FR announced to expand at LBA. Nice for the people in the Newcastle region by the way, Jet2 will create lots of jobs with this decision (as they say)! Is there a possibility LS will start NCL-AMS, or is the UK - AMS network such saturated that this route is not efficient?

This is excellent news for NCL, as there hasn't been much of an expansion in the past year or so. This might push EZY into looking at new routes as the seem to axe them but not add any new routes.

They tried it, but KLM were too competitive. A shame, as KLM are reducing NCL-AMS this winter .

Ah... Never knew that LS flew NCL-AMS-NCL.
Quoting LHR380 (Reply 8): Good chance to maybe restart then if they are reducing the schedule?
Yeah, they definetely should do. A good chance for LS to strengthen their positition here at AMS. The 2x daily LBA-AMS-LBA is performing not very well at this moment though. This morning only 60 pax on the way back to LBA. Maybe this has more to do with the destination LBA then LS itself?

LS are, sensibly, focussing more on the leisure routes rather than city routes where they can't compete with the likes of easyJet and Ryanair. By focussing on leisure routes, Jet2, Jet2 Holidays and smaller travel companies such as Olympic Holidays and Libra, Jet2 will be fine, despite what people sometimes think.

Quoting AirbusA6 (Reply 12): I imagine for most of these routes an A321 or 739 would be much more efficient?
Actually, these 4 hour routes are perfect for the 757. Yes, an A321 or B739 would be more efficient on shorter routes, but flights around the 4hr mark and above is where the 752 comes into it's own

I think its just the recession. KLM are reducing HUY-AMS from 4 to 3xDaily this winter and I think reductions elsewhere too. This is after about 15% falls in passenger numbers
Quoting AirbusA6 (Reply 12): Their fleet is getting rather old though, while it's nice to see 757s, I imagine for most of these routes an A321 or 739 would be much more efficient?
The advantage Jet 2 have with their older aircraft is that they can afford to own them, rather than lease them
Having said that I do think Jet 2 could do with some B737-700's or similar. There are some times where a B737-300 doesn't have the range, but a B757 is too much capacity. A B737-700 could maybe allow LBA-PFO to operate year round for example, or say BLK-DLM flights to be started. Or be useful at EDI where there wouldn't be enough work to keep a B757 busy all week, but the range would be useful to start say Greece or LCA flights once or twice a week, alongside the existing portfolio of shorter flights

The North-East is heavily, indeed outrageously, dependent on Government spending for the majority of economic activity. This cannot last past the next election, if that long (Gilts strike, collapsing pound etc).
The impact on highly discretionary spending like holidays will be enormous.
