Hi all,

Colombian congress approved last night the change of BOGs airport name from El Dorado to Luis Carlos Galan Sarmiento, in honour of a presidential candidate killed by the Medellin cartel 20 years ago.

I really don't know if this will take into effect inmediately or some legislative process has to be done....but IATA and ICAO codes will remain the same, of course.

Here's the link in spanish.

Now we only hope for BOG Terminal to be demolished and Opain can start building a new modern terminal, as soon as possible.

Cheers

It was approved in the lower chamber, I don´t know if it has to go through the upper. I really hope it does and doesn´t get approved there.
This is one of the worst ideas I´ve seen in years, and our politicians are not really known for their good ideas.
They should focus on getting the damn Airport fixed and solving the murder first.

I gladly accept donations to pay for flight hours! This thing draws man...

Absoluetely. What an empty gesture to give a name to an airport of a brave politician that was murdered, during a government that think it's alright to do dodgy deals in the presidential palace with representatives of the criminal world, and that has had close relatives of the alleged murderes of L C Galán working for it (Pablo Escobar's cousin, and Santofimio's son).

BOG will be like Brazilian ariports recently changed, that in fact add the new name to the old one ? (Like GIG and CNF for example... Galeao Antonio Carlos Jobim / Confins Tancredo Neves) ??

New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

Agree with you. BOG has right now bigger problems than getting a new name. I think the best thing Colombia cna do for Galan's memory is to deliver justice, period.

I heard on public tv the debate and the want to leave it BOG/ Luis Carlos Galan. But you know how politicians come with bright ideas sometimes. In one point of the debate, one of the senators mentioned that Washington DC airport code is WAS and its name is Ronald Reagan airport.....I wondered what happened with DCA....

Cheers
