Air China and Cathay Pacific announced they will begin a new joint venture to operate cargo flights based from Shanghai within China and internationally with the Air China name. CX will obviously benefit from CA's access to the domestic markets, and CA will have CX's knowledge in cargo operations to add value.

The JV was announced a couple of years ago but had not gotten off the ground. The merger between China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines has increased the competitive pressure to make this happen, as has the increase in cross-ownership of shares between CX and CA announced last week.
