With the Propfan AN70 being revived, and talk of civilian users, it appears that Russia has quite a lead over the west in Propfan technology, seeing that no western propfan made it into production. Could some useful lessons be learnt from this aircraft once it enters service, in terms of whether propfans could power the 737/A320 replacements?

I know one thing for certain - they look absolutely mean! Contra-rotating propfans on the AN-70 look absolutely awesome, such a look of grace and power about them.
