I really like the uniform design in the 60s and 70s, and I'm not really known for liking too much "vintage" fashion. The uniforms just look amazing, and I was happy to see a few afros in there too! Why do they all look so frumpy now a days, sigh. Even the fit ones often look frumpy and tired, and the uniforms now are bland. What glorious photos. I like Braniff's uniforms the best.

I dont remember where i read an article by Carson Kreesly (of queer eye fame) discussing the fashion behind the uniform of "stewardesses". I found a summary with no pictures - dang it.. it was hilarious.
Maybe some here can do a better job at finding a link to the real article.. some highlights:
"AMERICAN AIRLINES LATE '60S
"Think of her as your mother only sluttier! should have been the actual tag line. This uniform looks strangely medical ... nurse-like, even. Maybe that's what they had in mind when designing them? After all, flight attendants are there for our safety. Now, who needs mouth-to-mouth?" "

50 years later, through multiple mergers, acquisitions, re-branding, union rules, etc. these girls are NOW STILL serving you on board your legacy carriers.

Cool photos! Though some of them aren't all from the old days. In one of the photos, the stewardesses are pictured in front of a MD-80, yet they're in 60s style clothing.

Here's the photo that went with that AA ad from joeydevilla.com.

Quoting Mirrodie (Thread starter): And, for the record, is it me or are the women in those shots just gorgeous?
Remember, they look like this now:
Flying an aeroplane with only a single propeller to keep you in the air. Can you imagine that? -Capt. Picard

I'm wracking my brain trying to identify the aircraft in the next to last photo. That is a very unusual cabin (note the overheads and windows in particular). The source indicates BN but I cant connect that with anything they flew. Definitely has a 60's British air about it but it isn't a 111. It looks to be 3x3 comparing seats to video monitors. It appears to me that it might be an early VC10. I also thought possibly Britannia or CL44 but the windows seem too small.

No airline ever flew the plane depicted in the photo because the plane was never built.
I had seen that photo before in a book I have called Airline: Identity, Design and Culture by Keith Lovegrove.
The photo is on page 36. The caption reads:
Quote: "Braniff Babes" as they were known, are seen here modeling Pucci's 1966 uniforms on board a full-sized model of the Boeing SST (supersonic transport.) The SST was Boeing's answer to Concorde, but never got off the ground.

BTW, in that article that Mirrodie posted, if you put your cursor on each of the photos, then press "enter" it will take you to the source of that photo. I did that on one of them and came up with a whole other webpage.

Well one big difference is the loss of hats in this time and age. I would refer mostly to US carriers, but it seems the hat has been the biggest loss other than mini skirts
Atleast I got a good glimpse at a Soviet Stewardess
Quoting LoneStarMike (Reply 20): It has some of the photos that were in the first article, but over 100 others that weren't.
I looked at that site and had a lot more photos, if you go down further the UTA stewardess has glasses sort of like Pam Ann's Lilly Chinese
