Two New Ryanair Bases: Bari And Brindisi

BRI = starting Jan 2010 with 2x 73Hs
BDS = starting Feb 2010 with 1x 73H

With the new routes, BRI will have 16 routes and BDS 9.

BRI to:

CRL = Jan = 4x weekly
CAG = Feb = 2x w
NRN = Feb = 3x w
GOA = Jan = 3x w
FKB = Jan = 2x w
BVA = Jan = 4x w
TPS = Feb = 4x w
TFS = Jan = 6x w
VLC = Feb = 3x w

BDS to:

GRO = Feb = 2x w
EIN = Feb = 2x w (Joost will be happy)
TPS = Feb = 3x w
TFS = Feb = 4x w

With this announcement, FR will have 10 Italian bases - BGY, BLQ, PSA, PES, CIA, BRI, BDS, TPS, CAG, AHO.

FR serves 23 Italian destinations, and it's the number-one international airline to/from Italy (on EU routes) and the number-three domestic*.

there are a little mistake... is TSF (Treviso) and not TFS (Tenerife South).

Not really a surprise, considering the earlier thread about the possibility to open bases here, but nevertheless interesting to see that FR decided to open bases at both airports.

With respect to the routes, some thoughts:
* BRI to CRL, BVA, TSF and GOA fill the void left by the demise of MyAir. Paris and Brussels are now served via FR's alternatives airport; BRI-VCE is still operated by AZ/AP.

* BRI to TPS will be the sole flight between Puglia and Sicily; I wonder how this will work out;

* The routes from BDS are no surprises. TSF is just served from virtually any base in the network. I expect BDS-EIN to work well during the summer season (holiday traffic) although I have my thoughts about the winter. It will be the only flights between the Netherlands and this part of Italy, since MyAir stopped AMS-BRI.

It's interesting to see that FR is absolutely fine having small (1 aircraft) bases throughout their network. Next to BDS, BOH, BHD, ORK and KIR also have just one aircraft based. Typically, these airports are also served by aircraft stationed at other airports.

A couple of years ago, O'Leary stated that FR would eventually have 50 bases around 2012. Currently, they have 35 bases. Looking at the pace of their development, it seems that they will likely reach this number.

What's also interesting to see, is that FR is hardly growing in central and eastern Europe. Instead, the focus is namely on Italy, Spain and the UK, and to a lesser extent the other Western European countries (Germany, Norway, Sweden, France, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium).

Despite these new bases, there are still many aircraft available, coming from the DUB and STN reductions. I expect FR to park some aircraft during the winter season again, like they did last winter.

Yep! W6 is effectively doing in Eastern Europe what FR is doing in Western Europe. That they virtually ignore each other is intriging.

Most of AZ's problems are of its own doing and that of unions. Airlines like FR and EZY rightly saw a weak state-owned airline (due to high costs, inefficiencies and poor productivity) and consequently plentiful opportunities and went for it. As they should in business.

I wonder how the 'new' AZ will be.  Wink
