Lufthansa and SWISS have expanded their CO2 compensation programme to allow passengers to balance their individual share of the carbon emissions generated during their flight through the Miles & More frequent flyer programme.
Passengers opting to pay with their award miles will have the miles deducted from their M&M account.
The Swiss 'myclimate' foundation will then receive the corresponding amount in cash from Miles & More and invest the money in certified climate protection projects.

Even climatologists assert that international efforts to reduce total world carbon dioxide emissions will have almost little or no effect. That being said how can carbon offsets for individuals actually achieve anything other than parting citizens from their cash. I guess if you can sell people water, you can sell them pretty much anything.
Carbon dioxide is a non-toxic gas what one exhales. A pollutant on the other hand is defined as a substance which fouls or makes impure. CO2 may or may not be involved in causing global warming but it cannot be referred to as a pollutant as defined in the English language.
Alternative to carbon offsets is planting a tree yourself particularly in light of the dubious nature of some of these carbon credits and the very lax international oversig

Every new tree helps. So maybe they should offer a young tree delivered to my home and planted by a gardener for 50000 miles?
I think it is more that we have to be aware that with every CO2 we produce we increase it's concentration - which is already far above the natural equilibrum, that is why I think that the word polution is correct now for CO2.

From the perspective of the planet, CO2 would be a nutrient for plants in that same ecosystem. I would be reluctant to use the term pollutant in that vein. Possibly there is another term that would apply.
