Alitalia Unveils New Service & Business In A330s!

Posted (5 years 2 months 2 weeks 4 days 22 hours ago) and read 33436 times:

Hello everyone,

Today I received a surprising email from the Freccia Alata program (Alitalia FPP) with the news I've been expecting for the last year since the airline was taken over by CAI - the new management.

Since this is a top hit for me, I'm going to be very detailed and give you all I've got. If all this concretes, then the low quality AZ we all know may be coming to an end, giving space to a new and reborn wonder.

The email, directed to all the members of the program, asked us to go through a rather deep survey asking us for our opinion toward the new service they will implement in the brand new Airbus A330s that are due for delivey next June, 2010.

The most important aspects of this survey are:

Quote:

The new Alitalia seeks to relaunch its own immage giving as a testimonial the true Italian essence of the airline, looking to give value to the places and symbols of the Italian style, using as an aid the best brands from the country

The first set of questions in the survey were related to the new Magnifica (Business Class) section and the seats that are going to be introduces in the A330s.

These are the images I was able to extract:

Cabin (with mood lightning feature)

Dimmed Cabin

Business Class Seat (Pierre Jean Studio)

The seat will recline total 180 degrees, with electric control, a 15'' screen with entertaining system, under a mood-lighted environment.

Later on, they made me answer some questions of what things are important for me in a Business Class cabin. Within these, 15'' Screens for each seat, Total flat bed, and other things that we're used to see on top-notch Business Classes were predominant.

Next step, clothing. They showed what the current covers and pillows look like, and how the new ones will look:

http://pragmaadmin.idweb.it/img//kit%20riposo_def.jpg

The amenity kit, of course, would change. Here's the new one, made by CULTI.

http://pragmaadmin.idweb.it/img//Allegato3-Trousse.jpg

Then, perhaps one of the key elements: food service

Quote:

Another area in the Magnifica service in which strong attention will be focused is the meal and drinks service on board.
The new gastronomic service Alitalia would provide is seeking to:
- Promote, on a rotatory basis, Italian cuisine specialities.
- Depending on the season, vary the types of plates that will be served, so that the best fresh products can be served.
- Guarantee more alternatives for the customer
- Along with the menu, provide a Wine List composed of Red/White and Spumante wines, selected by the Sommelier Italian Association
- Offer the customers an experience with a Sommelier on board.

Here's the old menu vs the proposed menu:

http://pragmaadmin.idweb.it/img//Allegato4-Menu4.jpg

Obviously, the dishes would also be changed. Here's the old vs proposed:

---

My personal opinion:

I think this is the biggest step Alitalia has taken after CAI took over. It's probably the first time I've seen Alitalia giving the chance to the costumers to give some feedback on what to expect. I was very pleased with this email, and I answered the survey with most sincerity.

As mentioned in previous posts, Alitalia has been through tough roads, and I believe that changes like these will boost their capabilities.

Finally we've got a delivery margin: June 2010 for the new A330s to arrive. Will the 763s be phased out?

For a deeper perspective on what Alitalia is now and what is being proposed, here are two of my trip reports in Business Class:

Alitalia (GREAT!) [CDG FCO CCS] BusinessC (+PICS) (by 797 Aug 14 2009 in Trip Reports)

Alitalia [CCS - FCO] Business Class (many Pics!) (by 797 Aug 14 2009 in Trip Reports)

What are your thoughts?

I personally can't wait to see this realized.

Very good news. The new seat looks very confortable and very modern. Will be a nice upgrade for the new Alitalia and to improve business travellers demand.

Thanks for sharing!

It looks much better than the new DL BE lie-flat seats.

Indeed looks more like the EY Pearl Zone, very impressive! I wonder if we will see not so much a re-branding but a brand refresh as the products are introduced, perhaps new uniforms?

I am not to familar with the plans of AZ, where are these A330s to be deployed, are they to replace the 767s?
Will the new seats be fitted to their 777s? Are they keeping them fulll stop?
Has the Air One merger been completed will these seats be fitted to the Air One A330s? What is currently fitted?

Regardless looks very impressive stylish and a massive upgrade!!!

Well, if there is one thing I've learnt after my long years of suffering with them, it's that I won't believe it until my backside touches the seat.

If this happens, and we get a decent Y product as well, I swear I will throw away my other two FF cards.

It is an encouraging signal of intent. For now it's only that.

I think this is the same as Etihad Airways' Business Class isn't it ?

Or does it look more like EADS Sogerma's Solstys ? I can't quite remember / tell.

OMG are those greys the final color pallette?

What happened to Italian Design? Ohh, I forgot, it stopped at the entrance door of a Paris design studio (no negative comment on French designers, just on lack of ability from Italian side to deal with this themselves after all their advertised position in the design world).

Hold on, way was I so superficial. The new design perfectly reflects the actual Italian situation: GRAY!

Sogerma developped the Etihad seat in B/C (Pearl). They used it as a basis to develop the Solstys which is the one used on the new A330 of Alitalia.

The designs look great. I personally really like the the shades of Grey, lends itself quite nicely to the sophisticated Italian ideal... and it would appear that there is direct aisle access for all, which is always a plus!

While italian situation might be gray, I have to say that they have showed a lot more acertive desing than Hollands, Germans and many others......so if you have nothig to show it's better to remain quite!!!..... duck   duck

I think the new desing looks really nice, just let see if they are really going to be like these pictures.

Carls, I would hope you do not assume that, by having a Dutch flag, I am automatically Dutch... So I won't go into the subject of KLM interiors or the LH grey shades either  Smile .

Still I find those images very flat, as a professional in the field, and do hope to be proved wrong by the real product.

I do not think those greys represent Italian sophistication well - this said with a quite long experience about Italy. But hey, who knows, maybe the designer could only print grey-scale at first presentation, and the airline management liked it anyway? :P

I'm not sure I like the brown blankets. Maybe a grey or something like that or even a light green would be more appropriate for Alitalia.

Brown suggests something old when this is supposed to be something new.

Spot on.This is pretty much the same product as EY...just a few cosmetic changes such as the color of the seats, the placement of the reading spot light and the absence of the lamp but overall it is pretty much identical.Which is good news because even in what must have been my 20th+ flight on EY pearl yesterday and the day before (A332 and A345),i couldnt help thinking this is quite simply the best J class product out there.

Good luck AZ!

Taken fron Aviazionecivile.com, here's the list of A330s going to Alitalia with rollout dates and partial registration:

L'uscita degli attuali:
A330-202 matr. EI-DIP - Phase out 04-2014
A330-202 matr. EI-DIR - Phase out 06-2014

So, according to this, three A330s have already been assigned to AZ, MSN 1123, 1132, and 1181. So by June and August 2010 we'll see these beauties flying around! I can't wait!

I found a sketch of how it will probably look like once it comes out of the paint shop:

Thanks for sharing, it looks a major improvements if plan really materialises. Currently Magnifica is behind KLM World Business Class and AF Affaires.

AZ has just renovated its business lounge in Terminal C (where its long-haul flights depart). Unfortunately we will have to wait until AZ renovates its fleet with the new A330s. I am booked on AZ AMS-FCO-GRU next month with Magnifica and my feeling is that AZ is slowly improving. It has a much better and efficient network and lets hope it turns the situation around.
