Not really a surprise. For a long time, it was obvious that if any carrier would start A380-service to AMS, it would be MH. No other airline with A380s on order has such a volume at AMS that it would want to use an A380 here.

Good, but old news, that they will operate the 380.
On the other hand they have reduced capacity and we are now seeing 772's iso 744's....

That doesn't mean that AMS will get the A380 in 2011.

SPL is btw an offical code for Schiphol Airport.

It's an official IATA code that has been fallen into disuse. So far, I have not found reliable information about the exact status of SPL versus AMS. Some people claim SPL was for the old Schiphol terminal (at Schiphol East), others claim that SPL is for the airport and AMS for the city (which has only one airport).

i've read that in the past, amongst others, Garuda and Royal Jordanian, used SPL instead of AMS. For RJ, the reason was practical: they flew AMM-AMS-JFK, and baggage handlers would make less mistakes reading AMM-SPL-JFK.

At present, for department codes, KLM is using AMS and SPL to make the distinction between the head office at Amstelveen (AMS) and the offices and hangars at the airport (SPL).

No, that's not quite correct. Currently, SPL is the IATA code only for the railway station at Schiphol Airport. It is no longer the code for the entire airport. That code is AMS.

Many rail/bus stations have IATA codes for inter-modal ticketing agreements etc.

Indeed the only IATA code for the airport is AMS, however many people working on or around AMS refer to the airport as Schiphol or very commonly abbreviated SPL, because AMS would generally refer to the city of Amsterdam.
Doesn't make a difference if you are in Sydney and talk about Amsterdam or Schiphol, but does make a difference if you want to meet somewhere, as AMS and Amsterdam are obviously not the same... As a result, the term SPL is quite widespread around AMS  duck

It could be very messy trying to fly an A380 into the railway station , IIRC the station is actually underneath the airport .

To confuse it even more, the Dutch Railroad's code for AMS is SHL :P

Anyhoo, would be fun to finally see a whalejet here, not sure if AMS has any gates/taxiways that can handle her? I know MP has a pushback truck that can handle it, but other then that I haven't heard about any special arrangements for the 380..

What does delivery in 2011 actually mean? Beginning of 2011? Beginning of the summer schedule? Or end of 2011?

PS.: if everybody is using now special names for different airports this will end up like the tower of babel  Wink "1st A380 to Bembel City will be.... LH."  Smile However, FCKC, thanks for sharing this information.

2 gates at the end of the E-gates are A380 capable (E22/E24 IIRC) and at least the Polderbaan and taxiways that way are A380 capable.

That is correct although these two gates at the end of the E-pier are initially created as diversion handling capacity if an A380 cannot land at LHR, FRA or CDG. I am not sure if they do some extra work on them if the A380 becomes a regular guest at AMS. It will take a few years more but I hope to see the King of the Skies become a frequent visitor at AMS Schiphol Airport.  Smile No matter which airline will operate it, although MH or EK would be nice A380 operators for AMS.  Smile

You can add CZ to your list...
I will give it a good change they will operate the whale jet into AMS, maybe not daily but 3 / 4 times a week will be nice.
