Winter 09-10 At YYC

Just had some questions about if some of the airlines at YYC would be upgrading or downgrading their equipment for the winter season or even if they will be flying to YYC:

Will LH keep the 343 on the YYC-FRA route or use a 332 instead?
Will we see a AC 77W on the YYC-LHR route or the standard 333?
Will KL continue flying to YYC or is it seasonal only?
When do the Sun destinations start for AC, WS and TS?

- I've heard mention of the 77W coming back for the AC LHR flights - not confirmed

- You'll see a bunch of new direct YYC-Hawaii flights.

- I would assume that KL will continue as things can only go up from here.

- LH 343 will probably stay until? the economy really changes and they can sell more first class seats on the 332 (but I would gather the demand for business seats > first class seats on this route)

I've been checking UA services to Calgary. UA connects to YYC through DEN, ORD or SFO.

DEN-YYC -- It looks like United retiring its last 737 frame on October 28th will be felt in Denver since 733s and 735s have always connected DEN to YYC. And it looks like services in late October and November will be a combination of two UAX-Skywest CR-2 round trips and two 319 round trips per day.

ORD-YYC -- It looks like all CR-7s all the time with Calgary services turned over to UAX-Skywest for the winter season. And for those traveling on to the resorts at Banff, good luck with your skis.  mischievous

SFO-YYC -- Looks like no changes with three UAX-Skywest CR-7 roundtrips a day. But the last time I flew this route myself, there seemed to be nothing in the overhead bins but Nordstrom shopping bags.

Additionally, some thought that United retiring its 737 fleet would result in additional services from AC. But it looks like that won't be the case -- at least through the winter season.

Calgary weather is ridiculous huh.

KLM is here to stay, this is not a seasonal route, this is a 5x/week route using A332 equipment. It would be very nice to see KLM fly the B744 or the MD11 just like they did in the 90s to YYC.

Is MX still flying to YYC? It is A318/319 service right?

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

MX 870/871 are operated by A319s to YYC at the moment.

These routes, with the demand for Banff/ski pax, just beg for AC E190s.

I've just looked at CO IAH-YYC services. They're continuing 738s x 3 into the winter.

Since Continental 738s have IFE, snacks and drinks -- this is not hardship service -- even blocked at 4:30 each way. AC-Jazz will be countering with CR-705s x 3 blocked at 4:15 each way.

Oil revenue makes for nice service.

Btw, AA to the west of Houston will be doing MD-83s x 2 -- DFW-YYC -- through the winter with no countering service from AC.

I've always wondered how AC and UA plan their schedules between themselves as to who operates the flights between Canada and the UA major hubs at SFO ORD and DEN. Seems UA operates most of them.

AC *does* operate a single daily roundtrip SFO-YYC with an E190 (AC578/579), as well as a CRJ705 on ORD-YYC (AC8217/8218) in addition to the UA*OO CR7s. AC was operating 2x daily E190s on SFO-YYC during the summer months, but the second one was timed almost identically to WS' 3x weekly flight times, and naturally disappeared when WS' service ended for the winter.

The CR7, though, can certainly pull its weight in regard to skis and other snow equipment, considering the type constitutes the overwhelming majority of traffic flying into ASE, another heavy winter sports destination.

When do the Sun destinations start for AC, WS and TS?

LH is staying on as a A343.

AC is keeping its FRA flight daily with an A333. Last winter was 4 or 5 times a week on a B763.

I don't think you'll see the B77W on the LHR flight, its staying a A333.

Sun destinations usually start in the middle of Dec and run till middle of Apr.

Wrong. KLM will be reducing service to YYC to only 4 weekly as of Oct. 26. 5x weekly returns in April 2010.

AC *does* operate a single daily roundtrip SFO-YYC with an E190 (AC578/579),

AC has an odd configuration of gates at SFO -- one is in the E concourse (gate 61) surrounded by AA gates and one is in F concourse (68) surrounded by UA gates. The E190s, 319s, and 320s (to YYZ and YVR mainly) depart gate 68 which is near many more concessions, stores, and restaurants (even a massage parlor) .

AC CR-705s (mainly to YEG) depart gate 61.

I was flying back to YYZ two weeks ago and there was a MD11 KLM plane in YYC at the gate. Not sure why but likely a mech. issue? Also the departure board for KLM said "SEE AGENT" for the departure time so something was up.

The MD-11 was here as the daily A330 was not
available so they substituted an aircraft. The MD-11 was in Calgary on September 18th.

Last i checked, the B763 is in the schedules until next summer. I dont think you will see a BA 772 at YYC anytime soon, or at least until they retire the 767.

No doubt this is why USAir "West" will fly one 319 and one 320 a day PHX-YYC through the end of the year. Without the competition, I'm sure service would again be turned over to Mesa Airlines CR-9s.

And it looks like the AC once-a-day E190 YYC-SAN roundtrip will hold through the new year.
This matches Westjet's once-a-day service.
