LH bought the CRJ700 mainly because the 728 will not enter service before 2003, and they need an airplane to fill the gap. Since they operate quite some CRJ100/200 (about 50 I guess) the order makes some sense.

regarding this issue, i agree with Airsicknessbag and SailorOrion.
although, the CRJ 700s are not going to replace the ARJs for the time being, there are no plans so far, i think that might possibly become true in some time to come if yields and stuff change. originally, the Do 728s were ordered to replace the ARJs, and certainly to complement the fleet with such a massive order.
but there´s still an additional point i´d like to add why CLH chose the crj 700s: don´t ask me why specifically, but CLH chose the 700s on the one hand for services from TXL. the 700 is developed for longer, thinner routes and is faster and burns less fuel than the ARJs, so CLH thinks the 700 is more suitable plane for developing the TXL network.
i believe on a different topic, one of yoou guys, Sailor, airSickness, already mentioned that Lufthansa is not that happy with the performance of the ARJs which refers to the fuel consumption so the ARJs, although prefered among the crews, was never liked that much by the guys counting the money and doing the numbers.
and actually the ARJ was never meant to stay in service so long with the ARJ and as soon as the Do 728s arrive, they´re gonna be phased out real quick.
at the time CLH chose the ARJs, i believe that was late ´93 or early ´94, they actually wanted a totally new plane but at that time, the ARJs were already a little older and were already based on an old design, the BAe-146s. so at the beginning, CLH wanted to chose the Fokker 70, but they didn´t get it because the ARJ offered more cabin space. you see, that although, i think it´s a nice plane and it is liked by pax and crews, it was never going to play a longtime major role in CLHs fleet decision...
