Looks pretty nice. Capacitive touchscreen with the housing fully integrated into the seat is designed to maximize passenger space as presumably save weight over existing systems. Includes network connectivity to Facebook and Twitter, as well as a USB port for playing content off a portable media player. Hopefully we'll start seeing this make it's way into the air sooner than later. They seem to be focusing on selling it more towards OEMs for the upcoming new types (CSeries, A350, MRJ, 787[?], etc.) for now, but will likely eventually be available as a retrofit for existing types.

Panasonic says it's half the weight (1.5 lbs per seat vs. 3).

At least parts of the installation, like the ability to use external players (including iPods if you have the right cable) are going to show up on Continental's new business class.

Tom.

The only issue that I have with the touch screens is that sometimes you can feel the person behind you touching their screen. This is especially bothersome when there is a bit of a delay in the system, and the person starts tapping harder and harder in order to make the system respond (whats the hurry, its a 9 hour flight!)

I cant remember the carrier (DL or LH), but the games were touch screen too, and it was rather annoying.

Is this a replacement for the current IFE on DL?
My experience with it has been pretty poor (e.g. Touch location physically not matching the display for 14 12 hours NRT -> ATL, total failure , ATL -> SMF on election night, etc), and RUMOR is that have been some high level "disputes/negotiations" between Panasonic and DL management to resolve issues.
Watching the Linux "penguin" when the cabin staff reset it is always amusing ..

I love to fly, and it shows!

I believe I read somewhere that Lufthansa is going to have a joint press conference with Panasonic next Monday.
Even though I think it's about the re-introduction of Internet services after Boeing pulled out some 3 years ago.

It looks as if the credit card slot is built in. I suppose individual carriers will decide what software is loaded and whether that credit card slot functions.

touchscreen on a seatback = really bad idea. Especially if you have a kid with the attention span of hamster sitting behind you.

This is a really good point. I hope they build in a remote control so that kids can play games without the touching.
