I have heard from a friend in Europe that Gulf Air will unveil a new "special paint" scheme aircraft, promoting a "big event" by the end of the year. The design is being kept strictly confidential and GF is not discussing it with anybody, at least for now. It would be interesting to see another special paint scheme aircraft from Gulf Air, since they have introduced a series of unique liveries over the last decade.
So, has anybody heard anything about this? What aircraft type? When we get to see it?

Sounds like for the upcoming Bahrain Air Show in January 2010. Gulf Air will also be introducing a new livery which will be most likely be unveiled in time for the 60th anniversary celebrations; March 2010.

It could also be related to a UNESCO worldwide event which if my memory does not faily me, will be held in Bahrain in the next 1 or 2 years. I have a feeling this could be it. It's much more interesting and benefitial to Bahrain to market this event on its GF aircraft rather than a low-key start-up air show event.

I'd initially heard/read that GF was going to unveil a totally new brand/livery by the end of 2009. Perhaps this is it?
In any case, I don't think GF needs a livery redesign-just the occassional special scheme like EY does for the F1 races in Abu Dhabi.

Gulf Air will not introduce a new livery to rebrand the company. This project was canceled few month ago. However, GF will modify the current livery with minor changes only. The first aircraft delivered today to Bahrain with the new interior and the modified livery. Has anybody seen any photo yet?

From what I have heard, James Park Associates “new design” for Gulf Air was dropped. After several attempts they failed to provide a decent design to convince the government of Bahrain, as well as the staff of Gulf Air. A friend of mine who saw the design told me it was not impressive, so the management of Gulf Air decided not to proceed with it. JPA did some enhancement work to the current design, which was unveiled yesterday on a A320, but the GF staff was not happy about it.

Quoting Vasu (Reply 8): really don't understand why they need to alter the livery... it's so darn good the way it is!
Indeed, one of the best out there!

Here is the perfect answer to Gulf Air's conundrum:
Change the blue curvey line dividing the gold and white fuselage to red. Same with the engine nacelles.
Instead of bi-lingual Gulf Air / Tayaran AlKhaleej, go one language only Gulf Air / Bahrain, Arabic on one side English on the other.
As many have said, the existing livery is great BUT image needs refreshing and Bahrain ownership needs emphasis. The new red preserves the best of the past, is bright and obviously a change, and is proudly Bahraini.

Agree with Terry that the Bahraini ownership needs more emphasis and as the Bahraini flag is red & white they would seem to be the preferred colours but Bahrain Air has the jump on GF using these colours.
Interesting that they have not gone back to the company that came up with the existing colour scheme.

Here's what I found :
updated Gulf Air livery
The new aircraft also boasts eco-friendly paint. The environmentally sustainable chromate-free paint uses 15% less paint when applied to the aircraft, which in turn allows the aircraft to weigh less, which results in less fuel burned and ultimately less aircraft CO2 emissions produced.

Quoting Directorguy (Reply 17): The font used on 'Gulf Air' is just hideous. I don't know why airlines HAVE to tamper with perfectly good liveries
I agree so cheap looking compared to the old font!!!!
Whilst the colour difference could be down to poor quality pic or changes in the paint, if the cost reduction is significant that can be justified but there is no reason to change the font to some thing so cheap!!
And the Arabic looks much better below the english title but I can understand being a middle eastern airline that they would want them on the same level, although if anything the Arabic lettering should be above the English...

GF, please change it, it's awful. Why did they change it?
You have your own identity on the font style, why would you copy Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways as they have the large English style and small Arabic font style. This needs to be corrected immediately!!!

This is awful, one of the best color schemes being downgraded to a cheapo style just by this little change... it looks cheap, it feels cheap, but I guess an idiot payed millions for this makeover

It seems the gold is gone and has been replaced by a standard yellow which simply wont have the same effect but I'm sure it saves a lot of weight. The new font is awful, they've gone from something quite simple but unique to something bland and tacky which looks like it could be from Microsoft Word! I understand the change in paint to a lighter version but I don't think the change in font was necessary.
