Hi guys, couldn't find this posted here before.

German-only source:

On Saturday, 10 October, a 49-years old pilot of Russian S7 Airlines was banned from flying FRA-DME, Frankfurt police say. His drunkeness became evident at the airport security check. The pilot was later tested with 0.5 promille (dunno what the American equivalent is) alcohol concentration in his blood. Criminal proceedings were started due to "dangerous intrusion in air traffic", and the pilot was released on a 1000 Euros bail. S7 summoned a substitute, so that the flight was only delayed by 1 hour.

Promille is one tenth of a percent. I.e. 0.5 promille is 0.05 percent blood alcohol. (Latin per cent = per hundred, per/pro mille = per thousand).

I'd say that's most likely a measurement of 0.5%. That's a good-going buzz, but not stumbling-bumbling or toxic. Obviously, not acceptable for an individual who is about to fly a commerical aircraft. In some states in the U.S. this would be DWI.

A blood alcohol level of .5% is over 6 times the DUI legal limit in the US and would probably be fatal. I think the .05% is more like it.

Thank you. What's a decimal point here and there among friends?  Wink

Russians seem to have very relaxed standards on drinking. I was in Moscow a couple of months ago and I had a cab driver that was drinking vodka. I asked to be let out at once. I also noticed people drinking on the Moscow metro, in public, and at a church.

But God help you if you have your hands in your pocket while visiting Lennin's grave!

Thank you, pilot, for breaking the negative stereotypes about us Russians.  Angry
