First off the rules were quite clear on what would be allowed.....Mesaba didn't want to be the bad guy and so put in a deal that was over the limit knowing it would be shot down I would guess. Of course the locals were for it...more service on the fed tax payer back.

The difference in the bids was about 80K over 2 years with Mesabe offering 3 flights daily and SkyWest only 2 a day. Does not seem like a lot. There are a lot of upset people in the area -after 50 years of North Central acquired by Republic acquired by Northwest this is a significant change. I am hearing frequent flyers (World Perks now Sky Miles) arleady starting to think in terms of tackling the 90 mile drive to MQT to continue using NWA service.

2 flights to 3 is a big diffrence, but the seats lost are only 2...With a 50 seat rj compared to a 34 seat Saab...I wish UA would fly to MQT as well as I have family that lives there and it would be nice to fly there without having to go to CMX, and before the closest was GRB...

Just my 0.02

Only 2 of the 3 flights were usually Saabs. Most of the time the last flight was a CRJ. I always hated going there in the winter. I'd usually pray most of the way to the hotel. The cabbies there drive like kamikazes in the winter time. Holiday Inn Express CMX I shall miss your cinnamon rolls.

Was it XJ or Delta that came up with a Quote to the DOT?

They do have good cinnamon rolls. Those cabbies are just yoopers, driving like yoopers, eh. Only problem i see is in the winter up there with CRJs and a small runway. I know 9E hated going up there in the winter because of the winter conditions. My question is if OO/UA has to divert because of weather up there, where are they going to go ? GRB?CWA? those are the closest places i can think of. I remember 9E would normally go back to MSP is the weather was bad, to bad they couldn't use MQT as an alternate, would of been closer for the passengers.

YQT could work in a true emergency.

Everyone keeps saying XJ over inflated the bid. Did anyone ever stop to think that maybe XJs bid was actually REALISTIC? Maybe XJ/Delta really needed what they bid to cover the costs and make a profit. It is a business afterall. As to Skywest flying there... good luck and have fun. That place is a disaster waiting to happen in the winter, especially on the CRJ.

They need to invest in some Convair 580's --most dependable a/c ever flying into the multi foot snow falls that bless the Copper Country.

People talking about driving to Rhinelander or Marquette to pick up NWA/DAL connections.

Makes it tough for people in the UP who have appointments at the Mayo Clinic or Marshfield Clinic. Very hard to backtrack from Chicago to them.

Most likely no better or no worse than any other Michigan airport outside of DTW. It's all highly dependant on how the airport management keeps the field in a useable condition.
