What MUC's Role For LH?

From looking at various routes to the US, it seems like a lot of A340-600's come from MUC whereas a lot of 747-400's come from FRA. Is it just coincidental or does this indicate that they use lesser equipment in their eyes for their secondary hub at MUC?

There's nothing really "lesser" about the A346's that LH tends to use from MUC vis-a-vis the 744's used from FRA. Both offer F/J/Y seating with PTVs in all seats on the A346 vs PTVs in just F and J on the 744.

I guess I used poor word choice there; my idea was the capacity, where AFAIK the A340-600 carries a bit less capacity.

I wouldn't call MUC a secondary hub for LH. Both FRA and MUC are main hubs. It is more than natural that not all hubs have the same pax potential. FRA is just a much bigger airport than MUC is.

Just because ORD is bigger (pax volume and size) than SFO doesn't mean that SFO is a secondary hub for UA.

They're both equaly important hubs. FRA is predominantly a intercontinental hub whereas MUC is predominantly a European hub. The MUC and FRA O&D traffic is also slightly different. While FRA has a strong financial industry, Bavaria has a strong technology and bio-quemical industry as well as manufacturing. A city pair that words well from MUC may not work as well from FRA, and vice-versa.

And UA flies to IAD from MUC: That means that MUC is certainly considered Star alliance focus city as well.

Talking of which: Flying to BRU from IAD from Xmas: The cheapest option given the days I wanted to travel was actually to fly IAD - BRU -MUC -IAD! Silly isn't it?

Very simple ! MUC is the chance to grow for LH. Just passed MUC twice in the last few days -
so many flights to Italy and many other south and east european places and really nice and easy if you stay within terminal 2/Star Alliance. There is no room for all the connecting flights at FRA (even with the new runway). The selection of intercontinental flights (especially to North America is also impressive). I also prefer an A340-600 over a 747 every minute as a passenger.
At the moment no LH 747 is MUC-based, but this might change in a few years with A-380/B-747-8 in the game.
