Rumor: JetBlue To BDL? Why Not?

A rumor was mentioned on another website - and I want to clarify again that this is only a rumor - that JetBlue officials had been spotted nosing around BDL. I believe there was a similar thread a few months ago but this "rumor" also said that this was B6 initiated.

Anybody have anything they can add to this?

I have always thought that BDL is a JetBlue opportunity waiting to happen. I believe they could be successful operating a White Plains-type of service from Hartford with a mix of their A320 and E190 aircraft. I am well aware of the competition (WN and DL) but that might actually add to the appeal of BDL... JetBlue didn't seem to have any issues going against WN and FL on the BWI-BOS route (as discussed on another thread).

Let me know what you think.

I don't see why they wouldn't. It's too bad that BOS and JFK are too close for flying to. Otherwise they have to fly to Florida and maybe IAD. LGB is a possibility as well, albeit a distant one.

It is just for whatever reason we haven't started it yet. Any number of reasons as to why and I'm not one to speculate but I do know its been on a huge list of airports that want Jetblue at there airport. I did however do a ferry up to BDL last week. It was for a charter, I think for UConn football, not sure. BDL however is on the radar but there is no rumor of it happening anytime in the near future but its out there.

Maybe you were one of the "JetBlue officials" the blogger on the other side alluded to?  Smile

On a side note, UConn football suffered a terrible tragedy this weekend when one of their players, a star CB with NFL aspirations, was killed in an on-campus fight. Life is truly too short and very precious.

I'm just a ramprat.

I heard about that, I think he was the QB. He was the first in his family to go to college from what I read. Hearing things like that piss me off.

The IAD hub barely grew at all recently. It's all been a mid-con hub at AUS (i think they have some potential here) and SLC (built-up and pulled-down in a matter of months). OAK hub seems to be dying a slow and painful death in favor of more SFO.

Only explanation would be BDL-Florida, probably start by FLL, MCO, TPA, and RSW. Add a bunch of Caribbean islands later if Florida works out.

The only really really short-haul B6 flights are JFK-Upstate NY, and I believe those were mandated when they launched their airline (someone correct me). IAD-JFK-BOS is the exception, but that's a prime northeast corridor low-frequency shuttle.

For years Jetblue has avoided direct competion with WN except on a few routes. I understand that they are going to go head to head on the BWI-BOS route but I dont think they want to get to carried away with direct competion with WN!

AA used to fly JFK-BDL with their 738’s.

I love how JetBlue flying some point-to-point routes (well, technically just one excluding focus city operations) from AUS makes it a "hub."

JetBlue does not have a OAK hub, it does not have an IAD hub, and it certainly does not have an AUS mid-con hub.

Let me be clear, I'm NOT talking about JFK-BDL or BOS-BDL here. I think that would be sheer lunacy.

If B6 were to make a go of BDL, they'd have to fly south. I'm thinking double-dailies to MCO, FLL and possibly PBI. Perhaps a daily to SJU (that would be interesting) and perhaps a couple of daily flights to IAD.

Well its bound to happen! They can't avoid each other forever!
I think the BOS-BWI route is the tip of the iceberg here - clearly WN's invasion of BOS was not warmly appreciated by JetBlue.

And Comair flies it today. When did AA fly that route?

It would be great if BDL-JFK worked. JFK will open up the whole country to BDL travelers. IAD will only open up LGB, CUN, OAK, and SJU in addition to the Florida market B6 would likely serve nonstop.

I could see it start with about 2 times daily to MCO FLL TPA then add more in the winter and maybe a RSW and PBI add on later. I've been waiting for a BDL announcement for a while and I hope eventually they'll get there but it doesn't seem so promising. One day though...

How many B6 stations are Florida-only? There are only a handful, and none of them is a WN station.

BDL-SJU would not work; the local market isn't that big (AA carries mostly connections). BDL-IAD is not a large market either.

I don't know, but there is a large Puerto Rican contigency in Connecticut. Maybe daily with an A320 is too much but perhaps with an E190 or something less than daily, say 3-4 times weekly, it could be sustainable.

Good point.

If it were to happen, I'd say that WN doesn't have to be doing well there but it certainly would send a small message to the Dallas folks that Jetblue intends to defend its turf (true meaning = your presence in BOS is not welcome).

I realize its a big "if"...

BDL has had ZERO FLL service since late spring, thats just downright pathetic. B6 at BDL is only a matter of time, PVD probably would be too far behind either, plenty of low hanging fruit there to florida as well.

FLL, MCO, RSW, PBI, TPA throw a plane on any one of those routes from BDL or PVD competition or not and they will fill it.

However, I think with B6 goes to BDL, DL will finally bow out on the BDL-FLA market.

Double-daily service resumes next month.

Would you consider BDL to be Boston? It's 100 miles away by car. There's little overlap except in the Worcester area.

I could see them serving PVD, MHT, and BDL at some point. JFK would definately work from the first two, as well as IAD, MCO, and FLL.

I may be looking of the wrong people, but Amtrak has been looking at upgrading the Springfield-Hartford-New Haven corridor. I wonder how many of them would fly to JFK. B6 could put one or two E-190s timed to allow connections to the transcons.

Well, American Eagle flew JFK-BDL for a long time – it operated continuously between 1987 and 2003. The early morning BDL-JFK became a mainline flight for a period of time which ended around 9/11. That flight had a lot of people connecting to the morning Caribbean bank from JFK.

For what it's worth, Connecticut has the highest concentration of Puerto Ricans outside of Puerto Rico as a % of its total population. Up until 2007 AA flew 767s and A300s (packed) between BDL and SJU, although it's more 737s and 757s these days.
