Hopefully this route will come to fruition and not stay as a route the airline applied to got but did not operate. At most I think there is room for maybe 3 weekly frequencies on this market. However, the SJU-CUN market is popular as Puerto Ricans love to go vacation in CUN (especially high school graduates). The only alternatives at the moment are SJU-MIA-CUN and SJU-PTY-CUN. Good luck to MX on this one, they should heavily pitch this route to Travel Agencies, that would tremendously help the route.

MX served SJU for decades in the 70s, 80s, early 90s. They flew nonstop from MEX up to 5 times per week...perhaps daily. I remember the "noisy and smoky" trail its 727s left...they were powerful planes. MX also flew D10s to SJU every now and then. Glad they are trying again. SJU-CUN is definitely a market, many Puertorican tourists fly AA to CUN via MIA.

Quoting 787KQ (Reply 11): I also recall a 727 flight via Merida, I don't recall a nonstop to MEX, and don't know if the 727 could do it nonstop.
During the 70s and 80s, MX flew MEX-MID-SJU with 727 and from time to time the Dc10.
Later on, they switched on the 90s and did non-stop flights with DC10, 727S and A320s, till, I believe 1996 when the route was last flown. After that, MX was back in SJU in 1998/9/0/1/2/3/4/5 with very FEW seasonal charters until recently AM has done more charters into SJU.
MX will win again on this route, is almost inside 1W and AA will help a lot to bust this route. You'll see the 717 flying and hopefully MX later on upgrades the route and place a bus.
