Hi all

Maybe a daft question, but how do the pilots manage to taxi the massive jets bang on the runway markings??

I have always wondered how they perfect it..........................Jetpilot......your call!!

Im not sure if its exactly the same with the big jets as it is with light aircraft. Most light aircraft have some form of referrence that the pilot uses from within the cockpit. I know in the cessna 152's and 172's that I fly, one of the screw's on the cowling lines up with the taxiway line when the nose wheel is on the line. I think the big jets have something similar but im not exactly sure. Any of our airline captains here care to give a better description than mine, feel free :-)

Delta trains us mechanics to put the green taxi lights (which are the center of the taxiways) right between our legs. This keeps the nose gear from hitting them.

We are also trained that if the green lights suddenly turn white, we better throttle up and tell ground control we're on the runway!!! ;-|)

Well it is not as hard as it looks. You can drive your car with the white line in the middle right? With the expereince pilots have it is not much different then that. It is just practice. Most pilots can do it really well!!

If I can do it in a B747-400, C-130H Hercules and also an F/A-18 Hornet..........

ANYONE CAN DO IT!!!!!!

I have flown all of the above simulators (QF and RAAF respectively) and have found them very very easy to taxi. The Boeing 747-400 was surprisingly easy and also very easy to take off and land under varying conditions.
