Eurowings CRJ's

Eurowings has just started service to two new cities from Amsterdam, Hamburg and Berlin with three flights a day using a CRJ. The flights started on the 2nd and I went down to check it out and they were all using Lufthansa CRJ's. This makes sense seeing as Eurowings does not own any CRJ's but it doesn't really make sense since Eurowings is only 23% owned by Lufthansa and it seems unlikely that they would give them equipment to use on these routes. Why wouldn't LH they just operate the new routes by themselves?

The connection between Eurowings and Lufthansa has always been a little strange and I know LH wanted to buy them out before but were prevented from doing so by gov't regulations. So wouldn't LH giving them equipment to use on new routes also violate some sort of regulations as far as competion and market control? And wouldn't this negatively impact Eurowings relationship with other European carriers such as KLM? Even thought that deal is also in question right now.

Well if anyone out in airliners.net land knows anything about Eurowings I would love to be informed. Eurowings, KLM, and LH's websites mention nothing about any detailed relationships between the three carriers. Or anything about shared equipment and new joint routes.

Thanks ahead of time,
NUair

Kwame,

1. LH owns 24.9 % of EW; that´s the highest stake they can have without have to explain it to the anti-monopoly government agency ("Bundeskartellamt").

2. LH wants to acquire another 24.1 %; they have until September to explain to the Bundeskartellamt why this wouldn´t form a monopoly, so the deal isn´t dead yet.

3. EW´s alliance with KL is over, as of this summer schedule all scheduled EW flights carry an LH flight number. All flights continue to carry the EW prefix as well, so this isn´t Team Lufthansa.
As of this summer schedule all EW flights earn you LH Miles and no KL points any more.

4. LH has a shortage of pilots; EW will be getting CRJ 200s of their own this summer, so I guess they are in the process of getting EW pilots type rated for the CRJ. I imagine the planes you saw were piloted by lower paid EW pilots.

Hope this helps,

Daniel (living in Dortmund, EW´s home base)  Smile

NUair,

EW is using CR1 D-ANIK for several daily roundtrips on behalf of DLH (using EW flightnumbers) from STR to AMS.
The aircraft is all white with titles and tail logo only, but without the cheatline and grey lower fuselage.

this CRJ used by EW is a leased one. as long as EW doesn´t get its CRJs which they get through Lufthansa, they operate used CRJs, that should explain the mostly white fuselage.
