Just today ... was departing on UA 7174 from CLT at around 3pm and was perpendicular to 18L just about to enter the runway when I saw part of the tail behind the terminal ... dark blue with a yellow something on it ... ah, LH! And then she came around the corner, wow, what a beauty ... an A346. She looked so big and beautiful next to all the tiny birds in orbit around her Watching her turn from one taxiway to another was hilarious, the poor girl had to turn at the last possible moment to to stay on the taxiway ... in fact even her inboard engines were outside the taxiway ... made my day. I have seen LH A346 in DEN and IAD but seeing it today next to all the A320's and 737's and RJ's really made me appreciate what a beautiful plane she is. WIsh I had a camera ... quick trip and forgot to pack it ... sigh ... Murphy's Law. Do they fly her to PDX?

by now ALL Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 are with THREE CLASSES!
From the beginning D-AIHA until D-AIHL were only two-classed.
With Delivery of D-AIHM until D-AIHZ the busses were with THREE CLASSED from the beginning (and nearly all based in MUC)
The FRA-based D-AIHA to D-AIHL were fitted with First Class from last September to this year May. (LH took two A346 out of service per month)

Any idea when (or if) LH will replace the 744 on the IAH-FRA route with the A346? Would it go back to A343 as it has in the past or to the A346?

We get them every so often in PHL as a sub for the regular 343 to FRA. In fact, yesterday was a 346.

What makes you think it will go back to a 346 or 343? I know CO is starting IAH-FRA with the 764 but IAH will be a huge star alliance hub come next week.

Well the 747 has the bigger premium capacity (16/80/234) in comparison to the A346 (8/60/238).
But in terms of comfort the A346 should be better for Y and also for C (no middle seat).

I'll be flying IAH-FRA with LH Jan 24 and it seems to be operated by a 747-400

You have described the appearance of an A340-600 quite well. She is after the A340-500 still my favorite to see. And no 787 or A350 will change that.
I have flown the A346 a couple of times with LH. And these flights I was impressed by her comfort in the air as well.

Wasn't there talk about LH beginning the process of retiring their 744s? They'll have to be replaced by something eventually... I figured that change would be sooner rather than later with so many airlines dumping their 747s...

Quoting CARST (Reply 23): The A346s shouldn't replace any 744 routes except the loads are too low and do not warrant a 744, 748 or A380.
So the LH IAH-FRA route will be taken over by either a 748 or A380 eventually? That would be great if true...

26 Danfearn77: Could have sworn i saw an LH A346 in JFK last week. Or was it an A333?
28 EwRkId: Not to be rude but there is a big difference between the 2. Even from a distance you should be able to tell, the A333 only has 2 engines and the A346
29 Danfearn77: I know!! But i saw it for less than a second, literally. In amongst other aircraft and i couldnt tell properly!
