I am preparing a visit to Tokyo, considering travelling through AMS. I noticed that it takes KLM 11h20m while JAL only takes 10h25m AMS-NRT. Both use the B777. Is this only due to different departure times (traffic jams at airports)? Any insides about this subject?

I think this could be due to blocktimes of the JL flights are still prepared for 744 ops, and the 744 is a tad quicker than the 772 AFAIK.

Just my € 0.02

No JL's blocktime is calculated very closely for B777 ops.
KLM is flying B744 on this route.

The B744 is around 45 minutes quicker enroute between NRT and AMS. That should be the reasons.

JL's blocktime is very minimal on this route. Flighttimes this week between AMS-NRT are roughly 11 hours by B777!

while JAL only takes 10h25m AMS-NRT.

btw, JAL's blocktime is 11:25 hour on AMS-NRT portions, so you must make a mistake here. From this winter schedule 11:30 hours (STD 1900 , STA 1430+1)

In general we see that KLM and JAL (NRT-AMS) currently operate almost exacty same timetables, with sometimes landing at AMS behind eachother! Difference is very minimal, but indeed, the days that KLM operates a B744, they win (and KLM will bring the B744 on this route daily from next week, meaning JL's B777s give you a better inflight experience in all classes (guaranteed IFE in Y-class, JL has Y+, and shell-flat seats in C).
