Today I was driving from STC to BIS, and between FAR and BIS I passed a flatbed truck carrying two tugs, with the fed ex logo painted on the front.

Now, these weren't the style tugs that load palletized cargo bins, these were the type that would be used to load luggage on commercial airlines. The paint job on these tugs also looked brand new.

Anyone have any idea what they might be for?

Thanks

Possibly for loading cargo into un-palletized aircraft, like their feeder aircraft (C208)

Sounds like 2 belt loaders that FX uses with all of it's aircraft.

Or pulling the cargo containers to the K-Loaders to be put on the airplane. The have to get from the sort facility to the airplane somehow.

I'm just curious as to why two of these would be trucking their way through North Dakota...I doubt it is to BIS, all we get is feeder from both Fed Ex and UPS, so I doubt there is the need unless its a tag on.

Maybe it's on the way to Canada..

Tys777- wow we might have crossed paths today! I drove from GFK-MSP on I-29 and I-94. On I-94 somewhere outside of Fergus Falls I saw that same flatbed semi carrying 2 FedEx beltloaders.

When I worked for Airborne Express, we used to load bags of envelopes into the belly of the DC8. It took a beltloader to get those up there. Perhaps the same thing is used for the FedEx 727s or other aircraft which do not hold cans in the lower holds.

You know, if they headed further west, they'd be for Billings. Head south there and you get to Casper (which has 757 service). I doubt they are for BIS.

Keep in mind that FedEx has a mini-hub in GFK, they could be doing a trnasfer to one of the Montana stations.

As do I, I figured they were going out west, it was just a completely random thing to see in the middle of no where. Right up there the 737 on a flatbed on I-75 in Tennessee.

Small world..Well, good to know someone else saw it and I'm not alone...My fiance couldn't quite get why I was intrigued by the Semi...

Yes FX uses belt loaders for the 727 bellies and the Aft Bulk belly of the MD-10/11 and the A300/310's. I'm sure on the 772LRF too along with the bellies on the 752.

Hey Acid when did you work for Airborne, recently??? I was with DHL from 2005-2008 after the DHL/Airborne merger.

I worked there 1999-2000. I worked out of the Golden Valley, MN office when it was Airborne as a night pickup driver. Occasionally, I'd haul a truck of letters and small pkgs to the aircraft parked at MSP and help them load the plane. That was my first time in the belly of a plane and I didn't want it to be my last  Wink
