I was wondering why there is no flights between KOA in big Island and LAS in NV.
Both destinations are purely tourist destinations, why United airline (which send 767 to KOA) didn't think about it , or Hawaiian airlines.

Simply not enough traffic. LAS for HA is mostly for Hawaiians going to vacation in Vegas. And since most Hawaiians live on Oahu, it makes sense to start the flights from there. It's only a 25 minute hop from KOA to HNL, and with 3 flights a day (most days) out of HNL on HA, it's not that much more difficult to transfer before heading to sin city. But I doubt traffic out of KOA (or Vegas residents vacationing in KOA) would be enough to fill up a 767 even once a week.

Most of the population of the Big Island, sparse as it is, is closer to ITO. There are many good 1-stop connections and KOA-LAS simply does not command a large enough non-stop premium.

You also cannot forget about the Boyd Vacations Hawaii charters Omni Air International fly six times a week between HNL and LAS to the various Boyd Gaming properties (their non-Coast Casinos properties) in Las Vegas. Those bring a number of folks over as well.

Seems like there are more than enough connecting options...

AS via SEA
AA via LAX
HA via HNL
UA via LAX
UA via SFO
US via PHX

and something is telling me the yields between KOA and LAS are too low to justify a nonstop... but I dont know that, that is just speculation.

LAS/KOA passengers can easily do LAS-LAX-KOA on UA or DL (and AA too?)

I am taking UA via SFO for tomorrow flight. But why do UA send 763 to KOA? how often this aircraft is sent here?
Another thing, did any airline serve LAS from California by a Jumbo-jet 744 ??

Don't know about the 744, but HA used to fly LAX-LAS-LAX with a DC-10 for many years in the 90's.

There could be a possibility of some charters via OAI to run flights between LAS and KOA.

Delta used to use an L-1011. That's ALMOST a 747 right? Big grin

Because they can fill the plane. I think it is a domestic density aircraft which means the premium cabin isn't too spacious and they can maximize revenue by filling the back.

UA sends two 763s to KOA on most days, one each from SFO and LAX along with a 752 from each. I guess that Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays contract keeps them full.
