Sing Along With QF

If you are resident in Aust./NZ and you've just returned from a couple of month's holiday on Mars - or if you live elsewhere, you may not know that QF have recently trotted out the "I Still Call Australia Home" campaign yet again. One of the - if not THE - most expensive ( not to mention mawkish) ad campaigns ever made anywhere.

So I made up my own lyrics, which I think better reflect what QF is all about. OK. Those of you who know the tune; clear your throats, open your lungs and sing...

I’ve been to cities that never close down
from Rio to Seoul and old Dubai town,
but no matter how far or how wide I roam
I can’t get there on QF from home.

I’m always traveling, I love being free
and so I keep leaving the sun and the sea,
but wherever my goal or my loved ones do roam,
I can’t get there on QF from home.

All the sons and daughters spinning ‘round the world,
away from their family and friends
but as the world gets smaller, you’d like to think
that QF could tie up the ends.

But someday we’ll all be together once more
Without transiting Heathrow, o what a bore!
Then I realise something I’ve always known,
that yeah, QF doesn’t fly to Rome.

Have a nice week, everyone!

If they only had smaller a/c on that route and not just 744 it might have worked. QF depended on the one a/c too long

Where's the passion gone out of the airline industry? The smell of jetfuel and the romance of taking a flight....

Why indeed! A better strategy would have been to make many of their former routes - as well as ones never flown - profitable! Just about anyone with a pulse on this forum, has/had for years been saying that QF should have bought A330's (yes...but a LOT earlier than they did) / A340's to be based in SIN or BKK - with which to fly these thinner but still worthwhile routes more profitably. For heavens sake ... a glaring example: Australia - and Melbourne in particular - has the largest Greek-born population of any country outside of Greece. So, when OA stopped flying to Australia in the early 1990's, you would have thought it a no-brainer that QF would pick up that business. But no, back then they handed it (and a lot of other Euro-traffic) all over (mainly) to SQ & TG - and more recently, to EK and others.

Equally, why has QF never made a base out of DXB - which has an Open Skies policy - to counter EK stealing so much of their traffic not only to Europe but Trans-Tasman as well! Surely it would not have been beyond QF and/or the Australian govts' wits to do deals with the EU and other Euro-govts., especially on the basis that their own carriers were no longer interested in flying to Australia in their own right.

Anyway, it's Sunday, so relax, and sing-along with QF!

You clearly are one of those people that thinks of QF as a government owned business that should do what is best for the people. They are not! They do what is best for themselves, like every other business on Earth. Why do you need to make fun of that? With a population of only 22million and 5 major hubs in Australia alone, QF cant serve every major city on this planet. Maybe next time think about something realistically before you go and make yourself look like an idiot.

no but 777 sized a/c bought 10 years ago and they maye have had a chance at serving a number of destinations that cant be served by 744's.........

I'm with Airbear on this one...

I still find it bizarre that as one of its largest trading and tourism neighbours - Qantas still doesn't fly to Kuala Lumpur or indeed any points in Malaysia and couldn't make any operation there a profitable one.

Because they serve SIN, which is very close and they have JQ to take passengers to KL IIRC.

That said QF only flies about 20% of international traffic in and out of Australia.... That is quite a low figure for a flag carrier especially considering that there isn't really much in the form of an Australian rival and that even NZ doesn't flying onwards from Oz. It simply means that the likes of SQ, EK etc fly lots of pax

And I do find it highly ironic that QF regularly rates among the best airlines in the world, but the Australian press and public are never short of a bad word to say about them (as clever as this example is).

My very young friend, it does you no credit to use that sort of language in this - or any other adult forum - where everyone is entitled to an opinion and to have it accepted or rejected in a polite manner. Save the name calling for the schoolyard, OK?

Now... I certainly DO NOT still believe that QF is a govt. airline, and that therefore they should fly anywhere and everywhere. They are a commercial enterprise - and in my opinion largely despite themselves - a very successful one financially as airlines go. However, any business can always do things better, or achieve more favourable outcomes. To cut a long and well-worn story short - in the case of Europe, if Australian travellers really wanted go anywhere and do so via LHR or FRA to a lesser extent, then since the 1980's, the likes of SQ and TG would not have prospered in the Aust. market by flying from Aust., via their bases to AMS, MAD, FCO, MUC, CDG, MAN and many other cities. Now in this century the likes of EK are doing very well - at the expense of QF's traffic share - precisely because of the range of destinations offered. Hence my and others' assertions that QF should have and could have made fleet and route decisions which would have made them even more attractive to the travelling public. So much for Europe. In Asia : QF ignored the China market for so long (or came and went so many times) it was a joke. In the USA : for years after they abandoned SFO in favour of LAX, they said that there was no demand for flights to SFO. Seemingly ignoring the full 744's that UA flew past their windows each day to SFO as well as LAX! There are more examples like these, but you get the idea.

Have a nice day!

Hey Airbear!

Thanks for the revised lyrics - very witty and spot on! I had a nice chuckle. Would love to see your version air as commercial sometime.

Just as good as the chaser's 51% home edition  Smile

And guys lighten up already and have a laugh sometimes...and no I am not a QF basher - I still think it's a great airline but we all need to see the lighter side of things sometimes.
