Are New AA MIA Procedures Eff Today (05 Nov 09)?

Is today the day that AA closes E terminal and opens up the old A-B concourse as a new D concourse?

I work ground transportation, and we had major confusion today picking up AA arriving passengers. Either MIA didn't do a good job of promoting the new lay out as we were left in the dark, and we hold county permits to operate or it was a last minute decision. The story I'm getting is that AA arriving passengers no longer exit security at departures but rather at arrivals downstairs by taking an escalator that leads directly to baggage claim, while connecting and ticketing passengers must use another exit. Does anyone know if this is true? Again, I have had at least a dozen drivers there today, all with different stories from their passengers. Can anyone confirm what is going on? I flew into MIA on Monday and it was typical exiting departures at D concourse.

Yes, it was. Severe. Let's just say some of our super VIPs (CEOs/CFOs) were not happy to have to deal with ending up in the lower level around all the baggage carousel mess rather than go straight to short term parking. Anyone who has been to MIA knows how calm and quiet the tiny baggage areas at MIA are, especially when there are multiple flights on one carousel!

Not sure if it is just some temporary thing or if it is permanent!

Temporary. I remember hearing about a tunnel (or, more accurately, an oven) that would link Concourses B and E while Concourses C and D went down for renovation.

I thought the new baggage claim areas would be nicer than the caves that were claims 21-25?

I must admit that I haven't been down there in a while since I've been traveling carry on only over the past year! Not sure if that area has changed with all these changes.

I do know the trAAin still is not functioning as the stations were closed off.

When was this? The automated people mover was supposed to open at the same time as the renovated portion of Concourse B in order to facilitate the walk over to the High D gates.

The old temporary C/D security checkpoint used to empty near Gate D29. It's a long walk to any gate above D43, but doable. With the new checkpoints, which are (IIRC) located roughly at Gates D23 and D25, it's easily a 10 to 15 minute walk to the far end of the concourse. Since Gates D20 thru D29 are meant to be heavy gates, the spacing between them is far greater than that of D30 thru D51.

That's what some of my company's clients were saying- an absolutely horrible long walk! I don't know if this was just a slight delay and that the trAAm is now open. I thought someone on here would have arrived into MIA this week or someone who works at MIA would have posted some inside info, but to no avail.

I'm going through MIA on Nov 24 when I can check things out and see wht is going on, but I figured someone else could help before that.

Interesting... Concourse D is already a mess and everytime I drop or pick up someone at the airport, it is chaos!

I'm picking up a friend tomorrow and have a flight on Tuesday on AA, so I guess I will see it with my own eyes!

I flew out of Miami on AA three weeks ago, and I found the new terminal - what's open of it thus far - to be really, really nice... once you get through security. From what I saw, the curbside pick-up/drop-off area was as chaotic and crazy as always, and the check-in/ticketing areas I walked past (admittedly not paying much attention, since I had already checked in online and had only carry-ons) was ugly, old, and had low ceilings.

Once through security, though, the new concourse - and I walked all the way from D21 to the other end - was really, really nice. It really will be nice when all of this construction is done.

That part of the terminal was closed this week. The new renovated portions of landside Concourses B and C are now open, and from what I understand, they're supposed to feel like extensions of Concourses A and J.
