US, CO Moving At DEN

I'm a bit surprised that this hasn't been discussed yet, at least not directly, but the much speculated (in here) move of US and CO to the B concourse at DEN is now official. UA is giving up five gates on the west end of B for CO (3 gates) and US (2 gates). This not only allows WN and F9 (is there any thread involving DEN that doesn't involve those two anymore?) room to expand if they want to, but saves UA $15 million over 6 years and they get a $12.5 million one-time payment. This also buys some time for the expansion, either to the west end of A and/or the east end of C.

I guess that's the end of my favorite non-hub Presidents Club!

The Red Carpet Clubs better get on the free drinks bandwagon ASAP. If CO is going to be closing its clubs in favor of UA lounges, let's at least get some more perks! I used to be able to drink for free with DL/NW, I'm not thrilled about a cash bar at UA...

The article says a 10 gate expansion may cost up to $175 million.

And the airport deputy manager said the two gates on the C concourse might be picked up by Southwest.

The B gate deal is only for 6 years.

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember hearing a rumor about AA possibly moving to Continental's 3 gates on AA (their schedule only needing 3 gates these days) and taking over the Continental President's Club to become a new Admirals Club. Any truth potentially?

The gate swap might be true, but I doubt AA would want all of the President's Club - it's a huge club - one that's a bit too large for any carrier at DEN save UA, F9 or WN (of which the last two don't have clubs). I just wouldn't see any carrier really that interested in paying the rent for all that space.

That is for sure, what a surprise it was for this President's Club member to be told on Monday I owed the lady money for my drink, whoa!!! Otherwise the club was excellent.

Also ends the ability to avoid riding the train when flying CO at DEN. How much I loved the walkway to the gate area and stopping in at the Club on the way.  Sad

That was my first thought, too and I went back and searched and it's been mentioned as a possibility.

The two new gates - were those the ones that US used to use? Did I also read somewhere that AA might be moving to Concourse A?

All of the gates in DEN get reshuffled next year (save Concourse B, which UA has a exclusive lease on for 20+ more years). As part of that AA wants to move next to A to be close to BA, and all of the Sky Alliance partners want to be in Concourse B.

Couldn't they split that space up? If by leaving C, WN could have more space to grow, I'm sure DIA would swing a deal with AA.

I wasn't surprised to hear CO leave, but think it is ironic that Frank Lorenzo demanded concourse A so people wouldn't have to take the train (a supposed competitive advantage over its arch-rival UA). Now they're so cozy. Times have changed.

Oh, and another thing, I think we'll see US drop Star in favor of oneworld in the coming years. All to say, US don't unpack your bags.

...just a prediction.

The gate arrangements are hanging on AA-BA anti-trust agreements. I very much doubt that they want toe CO President's club as the space is huge even after they gave up a chuck of it for the USO. F9 has sniffed around there a few times, but the cost drove them away.

CO's lease was up on that space next year as I understand it. It will be interesting to see if F9 decides to grab it as part of their business rebranding with YX.

Wouldn't the airport rather get some money for it (sweetheart deal) than no money (sitting empty)?

This will be a great move. It sounds like everyone should be happy. I remember hearing speculation on this when Continental first announced that they would join star. This will be great for United, there always seems to be some empty gates on B.

Some on here were speculating that Lufthansa and Air Canada would move to B (obviously LH would have to be towed after customs clearance) but Air Canada shouldn't be a problem. Any word on those?

Air Canada used to have gates in the B concourse a few years ago - I remember going out there for training and business meetings and seeing the AC gates mixed in with UA gates, as well as the training facilities upstairs.

They moved to Concourse A after they stopped using UA as their ground handler.

Now that Frontier is growing again and Southwest continues to connect virtually every station in its network to DEN, this definitely makes sense - Concourse B NEVER seems to be completely full.

it only came about roughly a few months ago. CO was adamant about staying in A, until recenty. I never said it WOULDN'T happen, but at the time when everyone was speculating, CO DEN did not have the intention of moving over to B.

They (UA) always give me free drink tickets when I go in... I thought that was standard practice? Half the time i end up with a stack in my laptop bag that end up getting chucked. I didn't realize there were a commodity.

LH or BA gives premium fliers access to the president's club, too, if I recall. Wonder what they will do.

Off topic, who did AC switch to for ground handling in DEN?
