Good news for MLB as they could use a little competition. US previously served MLB in the 90's, but killed it after 9/11.

Great news for MLB.  Smile

US service to CLT is a good match for MLB in the current industry environment.

I would imagine the service would be run very much like the DAB service is, which is a mix of Republic 170's and Air Wisconsin CRJ's during the peak months, and then all CRJ-200's in the down season. Also of note, February is when the LGA pulldown for US as result of the DL slot transactions is supposed to start, and a good chunk of the affected flying is Air Wisconsin CRJ's, and they have to put them somewhere. PHL is maxed out as it is, DCA could be an option, but I suspect you will see a bit of a larger ZW presence at CLT. PSA will still be the big carrier in CLT for 50 seat lift, but I think ZW will get a bit more CRJ flying as well. Hopefully this means that ZW can open a crew base in CLT and a MX base as well, as ZW doesn't even have line MX in CLT other than a PSA contract, and the PSA mechanics can't do jack the way the ZW GMM is written.

Tickets go on sale this Sunday, which would probably explain why US Airways and Melbourne International Airport have not released any information on their websites as of yet.

I will agree with Apodino that the service will run similar to ours just up I-95 here at DAB. They will proabably launch the service with 3x E715s with Republic and then reduce capacity to CRJs in the slow months. The only difference will be that there won't be any temporary surges in capacity like DAB, due to the races. MLB doesn't have that.

This past year, US ran 3 E715s DAB-CLT in the first half of the year, then reduced to 2x daily CRJs (1xCR7 and 1x CR9 for a while) during the slow months. US currently runs 3x CRJs DAB-CLT due to the slow pick up in demand as the holidays approach.

Good for MLB. Glad to see another airport in Central Florida not named MCO get some service back or new service. It'll be another new option when I want to go to Daytona, which is nice.

Seeing the schedule at DAB go from CRJs/175s to 734s & 757s is always fun for a couple days come 500 and Pepsi 400 time.

USAirways discontinued service to MLB in Sept 1997.... long b4 9/11.

This was in response to the pilots no-furlough clause contract they had.
When it expired, USAirways closed 5 cities and retired over 30 airplanes (IIRC.)

I guess we'll find out soon enough, but I would be shocked if they use an aircraft as large as the E175. I would say we are probably looking at 3 CRJs, maybe CR7s.

3 CR7s a day to start and then go from there. And in Jan. Direct Air will start MLB-IAD with DC-9s but I really don't know if it will be 7days a week or not but its a start to get back to where we were.

US Airways is being subsidised with $850k to fly this route by the Melbourne Airport. US has commited to fly it until Feb 2012.

In this press release from the airport it said there was a "spontaneous applause" when the new US Airways route was announced. Who knew people would be so excited to fly on a CRJ  Smile

I've now completely reconsidered how I view "express" flying.

The headlines should read:

US Airways hires another airline to fly CLT-MLB.

I remember when US used 732 metal on the PIT/PHL-MLB route. Just awesome to hear them streak low over my sisters house.

On a similar note (coincidentally), I got a call about an hour after posting earlier saying my schedule out of DAB after New Year's had changed. For anybody interested, it's now 2 CR9s & 1 E75 a day into DAB.

I can remember taking a US 732 from MLB to CLT sometime in the 1990's and thought that the terminal was excellent and user friendly. I just wish more airlines would fly there.

That is correct. Both have 86 seats though, so no changes in capacity.

As for MLB, serice starts February 11, 2010, two years and ten days after US returned to DAB after a ten year hiatus.

All we need now is a west coast connector. I know I am dreaming, but an IAH-MLB flight would make me pee my depends.

And I still think a MLB-MIA flight would make sense.

A few years back we had an EV flight only on Sat. to DFW just like the CVG with OH. It would be nice to get a west coast flight but thats prob asking too much for MLB.

Just adding a fun fact, DAB was closed around the same time back in 1997.

DAB, MLB, AUS, SAT and ABQ were the 5 mainline stations closed on the same day in the fall of 1997

When Piedmont/USAir started back in 1989 they used the F28-MK1000 moved up to the MK4000 and after about a year or so moved to the B737-200 and DC9s.

Quoting Beefstew25 (Reply 20):
And I still think a MLB-MIA flight would make sense.

AA had service to MIA with the J32, Saab 340 and finally the ATR.
That ended in 1995. It was kinda surprising that they pulled out, the load factors were decent.
