A Colombian newspaper has reported the beginning of flights by Spirit Airlines from Fort Lauderdale to Armenia, Colombia on the 13 November arriving 13.30 hours. Does anyone have any information on the frequencies as the report doesn't mention these?

It’s very impressive the expansion of NK in Colombia: BOG, MDE, CTG and now AXM.
One can initially think that the intended frequencies at AXM are extremely low. Not necessarily: Spirit also flies to San Pedro Sula, Cartagena, Medellin, Guatemala City and Panama City twice a week for the time being.
San Andres Island was also taking into consideration when the talks began about new Colombian stations.

Regards.

But then again, how does this compare to the network just a year ago? Not too long ago, NK was flying FLL-LIM twice a day. Now, it's a once a week service.

NK is increasingly having to search harder to find under-served routes, since its found it tough to compete on other more high-density destinations like LIM or SDQ where competitors have been willing to go to war with them on price.

People are discovering Spirit is NO Jetblue. Spirit isn't worth the hassle for traveling to Colombia. AA from Miami for me.

Neither AA nor AV serve MIA-AXM. If you want to fly to Armenia nonstop from South Florida, Spirit is your only option.

True but since I don't go to Armenia, I can fly AA to where I need to go.

The news is of the expansion of Spirit in Colombia, and the convenience of a first non-stop service to Florida and beyond. It is also good news to Armenia and the coffee region, and its growing tourism industry.
If you already have AA to cover your own needs, then great. I forget how many flights AA has to Cartagena and Barranquilla..

Now that you mention it, I'm actually rather surprised to discover that AA does not serve CTG and BAQ at all.

AA has never served CTG that I remember.
They served BAQ, stopped serving, came back and left again in September 2008 if I am not mistaken.

I gladly accept donations to pay for flight hours! This thing draws man...

Well I wish NK luck on this route, as they will be living almost exculsively from tourism. The Armeina/Cartago catchment area is quite small and less wealthy than the Pereira/Manizales areas, which are covered by Avianca's PEI-CTG-MIA flight (Manizales is already too far away from AXM).

I do think they can make 2 weekly flights work though, because the tourism industry in the department of Quindío is booming (and a lot of it is business related), and I guess the Aerocivil and the city of Armenia have made some kind of arrangement with them regarding operation costs.

During 2007, Chiclayo, Peru was taken into consideration as a possible new station out of FLL on NK. However, the airline never materialized this intended project.
NK FLL-LIM is operating as 1x weekly and NK FLL-CIX probably would never happen.
On the other hand, Colombia seems to be a better choice for the opening of new secondary markets, regarding the upcoming NK FLL-AXM 2x weekly. NK FLL-AXM is closer than NK FLL-CIX reducing consequently the operational costs for the airline which is following its low-cost model.

It happened during the US summer break. Same with NK FLL-SJO.

It has already started! Last Friday 13th was the first flight, and it was received with great enthusiasm.

Good luck to Spirit! Well done for daring to go where others would not.

NK has every intention of flying to Chiclayo once the appropriate facility upgrades are complete. NK and CIX have been working on it for the past 18 months.
