Well today, November 15th is the opening day of Moscow's newest terminal, SVO Terminal D. It serves as the new home for Aeroflot, as well as most of their partner airlines. Flights will be shifted over to the new terminal in increments starting today and finishing in February of 2010. The schedule of the flight shifts can be found here:
Also, Sheremetyevo will be changing from a numerical system to an alphabetical system regarding terminal names. Around the end of December, current Terminal 2 will become Terminal F and Terminal E is already under construction between D and the future F (current 2). Once E is completed, SVO will probably share a common "sterile" zone amongst all the terminals. Current Terminal 2 is receiving a major face-lift and will continue to house 33% of Aeroflot's international flights.
The terminal is unlike any other in Russia, and offers customers a degree of comfort and efficiency that is completely new to SVO.
I'm sure more pictures will come around the internet today, as the first few flights depart from the new terminal.

It's about time. I know plenty of people who fly to places where SU would be convenient but avoid it because of the dreaded transfer at SVO. Additionally, when people why into Russia (from places like NYC), they also avoid SU because the transfer and changing of terminals at SVO is ridiculous. Instead, they opt for airlines like AY or LH which offer better connections and nonstop flights from their respective hubs into many Russian cities.
Question: I believe this new terminal is only for international flights, right? If so, can we except to see something sometime soon that will make connections from international flights to domestic flights easier anytime soon?
Edit: I looked at the link in the OP and saw that domestic flights will apparently also be moved to the new terminal. I guess that answers my question above.

Actually all SU flights will be moved to D. The only exception being a few international flights that will stay in F. Meaning, domestic and international flights will be mixed in the terminal. Partner airlines will also make their way into D.

P.S. According to SU's website, the first flight from the terminal has just been dispatched and is taxiing out.

Congratulations to Aeroflot! The new terminal looks clean and airy.
I am really relieved that I will no longer have to use the dreadful SVO-1 terminal when flying home!

Old, cramped, outdated, disorganized, disgruntled employees, inefficient. So forth, it's really a disaster. But SVO-1 is the domestic terminal on the opposite side of SVO-D, SVO-E, and SVO-F.
Have you ever been there? Cramped, claustrophobic, long queues first to security and then to check-in (yes, in this sequence). Because of the queues to security checkpoints you have to arrive at the airport very early - it's hard to predict when you'd be able to show up at the check-in counter.
Second floor waiting area is very smelly - it feels like everyone around is smoking. It's even worse in toilets - the tobacco smoke is so thick that you can barely breathe.
Since SVO-1 doesn't have air bridges, the boarding procedure is pretty dreadful, too. At a gate, you'd line up for the boarding pass mutilation ritual, then you'd descend into a dark, cold cage and wait until you are allowed to board the bus. It's again very smelly with tobacco - people smoke regardless the 'no smoking' sign and periodic yells from handling staff.
And only after you climb the stairs and get inside your SU plane you understand that air travel can still be civilized, modern and exciting.
SVO-1 is really a blast from the past - an airport experience the way it used to be when I was a kid. Luckily, it is finally going to die!

Quoting Goldorak (Reply 14): The link provided in the thread starter (SU web site) indicates that KL is moving on dec 9
klm.com doesn't prove the same.
Amadeus flight information shows that SU flights to AMS indeed depart from terminal D starting 09 DEC, while KL flights are staying where they are now - SVO-2.

SVO is technically closer and easier to drive to, but traffic really play a huge role and it can take 3 hours to get to either airport from the city center by car.
SVO and DME have what's called AeroExpress. It's run by Russian Railways (RZD) and they're upgraded suburban trains.
From SVO, the train takes about 25 minutes to get to Belorusskiy Vokzal (Station) and from there, one can connect to the ring metro line, or the green metro line that runs straight along Tverskaya Street.
From DME, the train is about 50 minutes also on an upgraded suburban train (although not as nice as the trains to SVO). Trains run about every half hour. The train from Domodedovo goes to Paveletskaya Train Station, which also connects to the ring metro line and the green line which goes north towards the Kremlin.
Ironically, both train stations are on the Zamoskvoretskaya Line (Green Line).
VKO is actually the closest airport to the city center.

Looks great indeed. What I find peculiar is that it looks somehow more like a modern North American terminal than a European one... was it designed by American architects?

What exactly constitutes the discernable differences between a modern North American terminal and a similar European counterpart??

Congratulations to SU & SVO as well as to SkyTeam Alliance! This should prove to be a much nicer experience for everyone.
How many gates will have jetways vs. remote parking? I still can't imagine having to board a bus in the dead of winter to reach an a/c.

Nice, huge improvement over the old SVO-2.
I remember my first arrival into SVO, it was so dark in the customs hall, half the lights were burned out or something.....
Congrats to SVO and SU !!
