MKE T-Day Period Traffic Expected To Be Up 40%

Travel for the 11-day holiday period from the Friday before Thanksgiving (today) through the Monday after Thanksgiving is expected to pass 214,000, up about 40% from last year.

http://www.jsonline.com/news/70590402.html

Last fall's traffic was of course stunted by the recession and Midwest's cutbacks, and they don't tell us how 2009 compares with 2007. However we know that for the full month of November 2008 (not just the Thanksgiving holiday period), traffic was down 15.91% from 2007 to 2008. We could apply that full-November stat to the Thanksgiving holiday period to swag 2009 to 2007 pretty well.

So...if we assume that the 2007 to 2008 change for the Thanksgiving holiday travel period was the same as the full month of November's change (-15.91%), then here's what we'd get:

11-day Thanksgiving Travel Period Traffic at MKE

181,800 in 2007
152,850 in 2008
214,000 in 2009

Even if you exclude last year's low number as an anomaly, this year's Thanksgiving traffic looks to be up 17.7% from the pre-recession fall of 2007.

This doesn't mean there won't be a lot of empty seats come January and February, nor that some of the recent expansion won't fall flat. But it shows that there is at least serious potential to grow demand significantly at MKE.

Thanks for the link Knope2001! Great news for MKE if the numbers pan out. Hopefully the airlines are still making money so they can continue to stimulate this increased demand.

Because getting there IS part of the fun!

With this constant activity here at MKE and everywhere else seems to be flat or near flat growth is this activity as a result of WN, YX and FL fighting for customers so we are seeing great fare deals and sometime in the spring as the fares go up do we see the pax. counts go flat too? Granted I don't want to see that happen but I wonder if that will happen. However, If the pax. volume continues to grow do you think that the MKE Airport management might consider doing some moderate expansion of the terminal?

For October, MKE's traffic was up 21.2% over last year, and up nearly 7% over pre-recession October of 2007. And this is before Southwest's first flight into MKE, which started 11/1.

Yes we do! It has the other airlines to start looking at MKE oncce again. AA is adding more flights to MKE from DFW with 2 more R/T's daily with CR7's. It's not Mainline A/C but it a start.

MKE seems to be doing well at drawing passengers from the north parts of Chicago. I was on a CLT-DTW flight a couple of weeks ago and I overheard a lady in front of me talking about how she lives just south of the WI/IL border and exclusively uses MKE. She said with the ease of MKE and the plethora of flights, you can't go wrong. Good for MKE! I wish we had 2x ER3s at least TOL-MKE...would make me happy.

I'm guessing that MKE will be like FLL, a large build up of flights, then a gradual reduction to levels where the market can support it.

We have a lot of winter run-a-ways that want to warm up and FLL and other Florida cities are very popular with Wisconsinities after January 1st. they head to the beaches and cruise ships and don't forget Mikey World.
