As far as I am aware, the 747 was landing from Sydney on its way to Jo'burg. It was a very windy and stormy day with gusts of wind up to and over 100km per hour. Just as it was about to land, a gust of wind caught the plane causing its right no.4 engine (I believe but cld be wrong) to make contact with the runway.

QF had to call in another plane for the flight to Jo'burg but no passengers injured.

Hi There

Here is all the details I have regarding the incident in Perth. I was at the airport at the time but unfortunately didnt have my camera :-(

The plane approached on runway 21 and during the entire approach was buffeted but crosswinds at 30 gusting 40 kts. The plane was forced to go around and made another attempt, this time on runway 24 which faces more into the wind. Again the pilot had to deal with these strong winds but the crosswind component was reduced to 20 gusting 25 kts because he was facing more into the wind than last time. A gust of wind caught the plane just as he was about to touch down causing the number 1 engine to strike the runway.

The pilot did a really good job landing on the centerline because if he had of been on the side of the runway the engine could have dug into the ground causing a major disaster.

Regards

Greg
