A question about Shenzhen Airlines, were there ever affiliated with China Southern?

Yes, basically some sources are speculating that due to the arrest and police investigation of Shenzhen's majority shareholder, Air China, which is the second largest shareholder of the company, could increase its participation in the equity of Shenzhen Airlines.

Hopefully this will improve their product. I used to fly Shenzhen and their main competitor, China Southern frequently. I only flew Shenzhen if China Sothern wasn't available. Much newer planes, cleaner cabins, more comfy seats (and cuter FA's). Price was almost the same, maybe just a tad less on Shenzhen.
